I haven't been able to find anything about the EFI reset procedure in the FSM, so it fits in the category of "black magic" for now. Stumped around in the snow for awhile and took pix of a wee part of our little planet with my tired and sand-scratched old phone (it's an antique). got home and dumped 8.3 oz of Seafoam in the crankcase oil, pre-oil change and the rest in the tank with fill-up. I weighed the 8.3 oz out. The remaining was 5 oz. All this from a can said to contain 16 oz. muy suspicioso! Anyway, it was a two-pack of 16 oz cans, so what went into the fuel tank was probably somewhere between 21 and 18 oz. It's supposed to be 1 oz per gallon of fuel. Whatever. I'm sure the Seafoam people would be delighted if I put 18.5 gal of Seafoam in my tank, and I suspect the T4R would probably not complain too much. Snake oil? We'll see.

Today I got a lot of custom pin striping done on the 4Runner.

The highest we have seen in the 4 months of ownership is 21.9 mpg. If the conditions are right it's believable.

I've owned my '96 since 2001. Bought it with street tires, it's been well maintained, I used to run high octane (good) fuel, didn't drive it like I stole it. The best I ever got was 20. I would believe 21, but 24 is pushing it.

Changed diff and transfer case fluid to redline, changed engine oil to royal purple, adjusted headlights, refilled A/C, rotated tires, new fuel filter, installed Skid plates and treated undercarriage to under coat paint.

yeah, I'd not believe it, either if I was not in a position of knowing it.

on an old truck rated at 16 - 19 mpg, 23.6 seems a little high. the ScanGauge thought it was 23.1, but the mileage / fuel math said 23.61. The Road Trip app did the math right as well and notes that my average has been 17.72 mpg since buying the truck in January 2015.

Definitely street tires, a bit over-inflated at 35 psi all around. As AZBub notes, we were in hyper-miler mode rather than drive it like you stole it mode. Also, we came in on the south side of Mt. Rainier, east on 12, north on 123 to 410, then back on the north side, sticking to backroads. This route had long flat stretches with gradual climbs initially, then some good downhill from Tipsoo to Enumclaw. Maybe tailwinds were in effect, too. Who knows?

Yes, it is. I'll try to behave. The math is accurate. The T4R is straight stock and very well maintained from what I can tell so far.

...all that, very little stop and go traffic, and get lucky on the downhill. Also, we only had our backpacks, a frisbee, and some tire chains in the truck so it wasn't running heavy.

As the original owner with only 12 miles when I picked it up and more than 312,000k now there is NO WAY you got 23.6 miles. Before my motor got "tired" I was able to get over 300 miles from a tank but never 377. As a guide in the Cascades I've hiked and driven the Tipsoo Lake loop. There's not a ton of altitude gain, but your 5VZ would be huffing and puffing along that drive. Just getting there via 169 or 410 you would be into the throttle. Reset your trip meter the next time.

Tipsoo to Enumclaw via the 169 to the 405? Nice long stretches yes, but still...not 24mpg. Recalculate the scan gauge and double check it with your next fill up. Something is off.

Luckily it came out with some very careful drilling with an extractor. Headed over to get a new one when the parts store opens, so I can pump it full of grease.

Funny - I just bought some new zerks for the exact same thing. Did it hit your gas tank skid?
