CatClamp Catalytic Converter Theft Prevention Lock

Not bullet proof by a long shot, but something.

We had a guy from New York down in our shop who had one of these cat clamps on his tacoma and holy cow. It doesnt look like much but when we were under the truck there was no way you were getting the cat without taking the whole exhaust. It was crazy

Cool! Looks like a pretty simple setup. That's what I would like, plus paint the reflectors black. Do you have any pics of night and the cutoff line? Also what parts did you get?

did you do a write up on what projectors you used and what not?

No write up, barely took any pictures. I found some projectors on Amazon for cheap that would fit my HID kit.

As much as I like the idea in theory, I don't want to spend years in prison for unjustifiably maiming some worthless POS.

I have several rifles, and handguns. There was no time to grab them if I wanted to get a good look at and possibly catch the POS. As it was, I gave a good description of the car and the POS to the Police.

Now if I could have gotten ahold of the little POS, and if he had tried to fight my detaining him, then I'd have no problem defending myself.

Yea I get carried away sometimes... My father did have the opportunity to find 3 thieves stealing stuff from his car port, including a generator that they were moving when he got there. He doesn't own a gun but he happened to be doing work on the car port so there was a 4x4 on the ground. my dad utilized that to bash one of the thieves in the jaw. By this time the other 2 were attempting to back out of the driveway. Which my dad's worker had blocked off with the work van and was calling the cops to save the thieves. Before they could cut through the yard my dad picked up a large rock and threw it on the engine and actually made it stop. Again utilizing the 4x4 he kept the theives in the car until the cops came. The other guy that was bleeding from his jaw had stumbled off into the woods.

Anyways the cops arrived and arrested the 2 thieves and sent dogs to track the other one. They were about to charge my dad for assault for bashing the guys head but the cop in charge let it slide because he said it took place under the car port. They ended up not finding the other thief until a day later with a broken and cut jaw. He was a repeat offender so he ended up doing a few years for several theft charges.

I really didn't have a point to that story except maybe not calling the cops is better when you take matters into your own hands because they will try to charge you for assault.

The Cop said the car I saw fit the description of a car that had been stolen within the previous two hours, on the other side of the valley (approx. 20 miles away).

That's an interesting deterrent you made. I'll have to give this some thought. Thanks for the idea.

If anyone else has an example of what they've done to prevent their Cat from being stolen, I'm all ears.

I went to my local hardware or home improvement store of choice and bought about 6' of 3/8 steel cable (the kind not sheathed in plastic, just bare steel)

I then wrapped it around the cat starting at the front cat all the way down to the muffler, then back, so there are two wraps of 5/8 steel cable around the entire cat and pipes. I welded the cable on every few inches using a block of wood to hold the cable in place while it was melted onto the pipe. It's loose enough to allow for expansion/contraction of regular driving cycles, and to be difficult to cut with a sawzall, but tight enough to not rattle around.


To remove the cats, you have to cut the steel. Then weld it back up once done. It sucks, but it's worth it not having to pay for another cat (mine got stolen before doing this).


I also had a 1/4" strap welded down the length of the cats, welded from the hangars, but that got removed and has not been added back.

Sold my factory wheels and tires and used the $ for a Rola Vortex roof rack. It'll ride at stock height until I add the extension, weld it together, and build low profile mounts.

Mounted and balanced 2 General Grabber HTS 245/75-16 on stock wheels.

One balanced out great,had a road force measurement of only 4 lbs. I wasn't expecting single digit measurements on a truck/SUV tire, that's low even for a passenger car tire. Link explaining what Road Force measurement is

The other tire, not so good, just watching it spin on the balancer I could see it was out of round. Road force was at 36 lbs, even though it could be balanced you would feel vibrations if this was installed as a front tire.

I'll be mounting 3 more next week (replacing the spare since it's original from 2002), hoping at least two of those balance out fine while I get a replacement sent for the out of round one.

Can you post what shocks you got and more pictures of where they're mounted? How well do they work?

I followed the install instructions for the burtman industries kit. You can find it on their website. The shocks are Power Fist 20" from Princess Auto (Canadian store). I paid $10 for each shock. Got some brackets for $10 a pair. They were a bit too large though so I had to cut and bend them to fit. Works pretty good, can't complain.

i don't know if it's one from the period, but it was there so i took it. i noticed a lot of different choices of nets at the dealer this morning when i went in to get some parts i ordered. i don't think these are model specific, rather universal fit.

I found one of those for a 07 tundra at a thrift store for a $1 so I got it and installed it on the back of my rear seats connected to the pull up things for the seat and the head rest bars and I love it
