On a more serious note, the PO never did much maintenance...ever. I think this may actually be 384,000 miles worth of shit on my throttle body. I didn't have any cleaner at the time, so I'll be back to that soon....though I'm wondering if the gunk is actually holding it together.
Finally got the motivation to take another stab at attempting to drain and fill the front diff, after doing the rear diff and transfer case.
I would like to personally thank the bafoon mechanic who went above and beyond his job to torque down the drain and fill plugs to 250 ft lbs. It was an absolute joy when the plug finally broke loose and my hand hit the pavement at 50 mph. Hats off to you sir.
Leverage is your friend. That and mechanix gloves and impacts. After 12yrs of smashing fingers breaking bolts loose and slicing skin off my knuckles I manned up and bought gloves. Now I hate to wrench without them.
:heh:I promise I'm not laughing with joy right now. I swear I'm not.
Drove my truck with zero issues today after changing my spark plugs yesterday, the biggest maintenance task I've attempted by myself so farI have extremely limited mechanical experience and am still quite intimidated by working on the engine, but reading this forum for the past year or so gave me the info and confidence I needed to give it the plugs a shot instead of forking over 200+ dollars to the dealer- yay!
...Even if it took me FOREVER to get everything done![]()
More bonus points for "it works" than for "it was fast".Drove my truck with zero issues today after changing my spark plugs yesterday, the biggest maintenance task I've attempted by myself so farI have extremely limited mechanical experience and am still quite intimidated by working on the engine, but reading this forum for the past year or so gave me the info and confidence I needed to give it the plugs a shot instead of forking over 200+ dollars to the dealer- yay!

I always try to do work myself for two reasons; one- you spend more time on the job ensuring its done right, as oppose to a dealer/shop which works on a fast turn over method. And two, money is saved as you mentioned, which can be applied to more car parts.:biggrin1:

Real good points. Most of us who enjoy wrenching do it because we're tactile learners and are mostly logical thinkers. It's a natural. When I do the work I'm 100% sure it's done right. You see a lot of engineers on here and very few creative types with arts majors, comparatively speaking. I applaud those that attempt their own maintenance that aren't "mechanically inclined." For most of us it's hard to fathom not understanding which end of a wrench you can blow bubbles out of but it's true. For those guys to change spark plugs and to do it correctly is a major accomplishment. And of course a residual benefit is the money saved.
I used to care about doing my own maintenance. Then I got an adult job making adult money. Now I only do it if I want to. Find a good mechanics shop around your house. I'll gladly pay an extra $10 or so and take a nap or drink coffee while they change my oil. Saves me the hassle of storing and disposing and all of that running around. Only time these days I'll do regular maintenance is if they charge some stupid amount to do it. Like $150 for a trans drain and refill. That's ludicrous.
