replaced steering rack guide bushing with the
Notice how the old bushing is a roller bearing style that a lot of play where the other is a cup of style you'll notice I used torque marks where I put it the first time and then backed it off because it I noticed a little tiny bit of binding while driving around the block in the city so far on the highway after a couple hundred miles it feels much more solid and it has eliminated any vibration I thought was due to the drive shaft
Tool I made to tighten the cap with some stuff I had laying around the office it's 5/8 threaded rod and grab a couple nuts if you're at the hardware store

What is the proper torque for the new one?

No need to quote the whole post to ask the question the proper torque is 18 foot pounds then pack it off by 18 degrees for the factory service manual

I followed their technique but in the end I just tighten it down to what I thought 18 foot pounds was and then marked it test drove and came back and backed it off a little bit the tools are used for a large pair of channel locks and an adjustable large wrench

At what speeds did you notice the vibration? Mine has a slight shimmy at 55-60. I can hardly feel it all at slower or faster speeds. I just replaced the rack bushings and it helped but it's still there. So the next route will be either the slip joint cotter pin or the rack guide bushings. Probably both. lol

I did notice a shimmy starting at 55-60 but I also have an exhaust hum that I thought could have been attributed to drive shaft issues or something else. Likely the smaller sized resonator/muffler before the exhaust

fixing the steering guide bushing really solve a lot of problems and I was able to hang with traffic to Chicago and look down and realize I was doing 85 but it felt more like 55 it was so solid

So there are holes? All it said in the original purchase paperwork as condition of purchase was that they were removed. Hmmmmm.....

I am going to look at the inside next time my door panels are off.

Long story short...

I thought they were plastic, then they started to loose paint & rust on the tops so they are metal. I see no way to remove them for paint except to remove the door panels.

Just put in my OME 881/906 lift. Well technically yesterday but I got it aligned today so its official. I went with the 10mm spacers in the back to give it a bit nicer stance. I also opted for the OME 60073 softer rear shocks instead of the 60028 and it is just perfect. Firm and responsive but not rough. So far I would definitely recommend this lift. We'll see how much it settles. The tires are 265/75R16. I posted a few more pics in the actual lift thread.

Nice. I have 890 in the rear with 60073 comforts and it's nice. A little rough though (could be the spring difference or the shitty Austin roads)
