What Did You Do To Your 3rd Gen Today?

Finally made some more headway on the 4Runner. It is now King and Camburg equipped! Also discovered one of my sway bar mounts had come off so fixed that. Needs to be raised some in the front and then headed to get an alignment.

What kind of wheeling do you do?

Replaced a bad alternator, and since I was in there already figured I'd do all the belts since they were kinda rotten looking. At least I've got three spare belts now just in case.

T4r92: I've got the same rear shocks but no adjusters. Little harsh on the street but great in the dirt!

new to forum, thought id share some. Put 265/75/16 yoko geolanders on it last week at work and front grill. been lurking on here for a while for the wealth of knowledge and its awesome. first 4runner, first toyota, first vehicle thats capable of going over a curb without hurting anything lol.

What did you do to your 3rd gen today?

Thought since I have sliders now I might as well get a hi lift. Saves weight over my floor jack and less space. Tested it out so I know how to use it, I've looked at tons of videos and want to use it safely. Works great.

New rear lift (OME 861s/Tokico shocks /adjustable panhard and SS rear body mounts) & custom CBI rear plate bumper with dual swing outs (write-up to come). Just had to park by this stock 3rd gen! Couldn't resist posting...

i wonder what other people think when they walk out and see a modded 4runner next to theirs lol. Like a casual person....

I thought you had the rear axle out of a 90 series with rear disc brakes?

I do.

Handbrake still uses drums, just like most other larger Toyotas.
90 series uses the same axles seals as we did from the factory, same sealing mechanism.. same potential to leak!

Good new is, it definitely WAS oil contamination, but there was no sign of a recent leak, so I cleaned it all back, reused the shoes and put it back together. Handbrake now works as intended and seems equal across both sides (that's part of the test, on a brake roller)

I'm not sure why there would be oil contamination in there and no obvious leak (I assume it was axle oil) it was a tiny amount, just enough to "lubricate" the shoes. I'm guessing it was either from assembly (I use trans oil to lube the sealing services on the axle seals) or a bit leaked out when the oil was extra hot due to running in the new ring gear and pinion, on a new seal. (Yet all seals are new, if one was incorrectly fitted or damaged, I'd expect to see a lot more. Breather is new too)

I don't like the fact that it happened as I don't believe things "fix themselves" but I deliberately didn't fit my new shoes, so I can pull it apart in a couple of months and see if there is any more evidence of a leak, now I know its all been cleaned up. When I do I have some more parts to fit (new bell crank, pin, boot and bracket to cut down some lateral play in the mechanism) I'll fit the new shoes then.

The only other things I can think of are:
-Some of the copper slip I used on the moving parts degenerated and ran
---Unlikely, it didn't look like it and copper slip has a distinctive look, I'm very careful when putting it on, plus that's thermally stable. It generally doesn't really happen.
-The "oil" contamination was actually brake fluid, from bleeding.
---Possible, I didn't sniff it, but and dirty trans oil when its just a residue looks like dirty brake fluid. (there was only a very small amount in the inner mating face of the disk) If that is the case I'd have expected deterioration to the POR15 finish.. (I know its good.. but brake fluid good?)

kolelt , I will have to look at the tags in the boxes. I do not know the collapsed measurements, but I can take a measurement at some point soon. I plan on lifting the front up some more today and have to get it aligned. Can probably do it after when I find a place to articulate the rear.
Mudeprived , I will be doing crawling mostly, overlanding style stuff. Nothing too incredibly heavy, as this is my daily driver also. Been spending my time mainly getting the truck up to par and capable of handing short trips. I upgraded over Bilstein stuff. So far I am pleased.

I Bought It!

I bought this '99 limited two days ago. Since then, removed the running boards, drained and filled the rear differential, cleaned the throttle body and MAF, and have a new radiator coming in Wednesday that will be installed next weekend. I know all of those things are basic, but they were even basic for a beginner like me thanks to this forum! You guys rock

Learned that Shrockworks armor is not removal friendly to a single person. Found a torn upper CV boot, so I ordered 2 new CV axles from NAPA. Going to have to bite the bullet and do my timing belt kit, and oil pan at the same time as the rear main seal. See my build thread for pics...

You know what they say, when it rains, it pours.

On the upside, I am getting a good little bit of the surface rust off of the armor....work in progress.

Horns

Been wanting to do this for a while and finally got around to it... Took out the factory horns and went with FIAMM brand, model El Grande. Sounds essentially like the American car horns. They sound fantastic. Completely plug and play. Used original bolts and the original female harness plugged right on to the male. Upgraded in 10 minutes.

The good:

Finally got around to getting the 5100's and OME906's into the rear end of the 4Runner. That damn upper attachment point for the rear shock is AWFUL.

Driving certainly seemed improved over the old 159k shocks and springs, thats for sure.

The bad however:

Not sure what to do about this one yet.

scored a pair of factory roof rails at the jy today; also cleaned my throttle body fixed my negative battery cable, and removed my air box that has a hole in it. looking for one. that was the purpose of the jy visit but didn't have any.

I drove 512 miles in one shot and got 20.8 MPG using the overfill method - 15.5 US gallons took me 323.1 miles

Not super scientific, but I can repeat this every time I drive this stretch of road

Cool!

Can you post a sound byte?

Headed out to Ocean Shores, WA.

Fun little day trip with me and my special lady friend. We headed out to Ocean Shores and briefly stopped in Gig Harbor at the Devoted Kiss cafe for breakfast. I had an awesome pulled pork breakfast burrito and continued on using back roads as much as possible to go check out Ocean Shores.

We drove by Satsop, in Elma, WA. (Abandoned Nuclear Plant). Further on the way, we drove through Aberdeen, WA., the place where Kurt Cobain was from.
We made it there with some daylight to spare so we hit the beach, driving and snapping some fun touristy shots before heading back. (I had to make sure to find a small tree no larger than a parking stop to conquer for my photo op.) Mission accomplished! We snapped a few more pics, talked to a dude on the beach whose dog was chasing a large flock of birds up and down the beach and then decided to bounce after hitting up a local car wash to hose any saltwater off my rig.

We stopped on our way out of town for a minute at a casino to play a few minutes of one-armed bandit before the smoke started to chase us out with red eyes and a little less money than we entered with. I wish I owned a casino. It's just a giant fleecing operation.

All in all, I had a great day and got to see some things I had yet to see even after living here for 15 years.:D

Yesterday the odometer rolled over to 156,000 miles. Glad to see my "1,000" position gear is not broken. Did her 2nd oil change since Ive owned her. Forgot how much goddamn oil drains out. Today I played with my new belt tensioner I got for Christmas. Alternator and power steering belts were way under tensioned at like 40lbs. Discovered the lack of design consideration when adjusting the power steering pump. Thank God for gear wrenches.
