What Did You Do To Your 3rd Gen Today?

Began the road to freshening it up. Currently at 266xxx miles, starting to get a feeling in my gut that shits gonna start causing issues so I checked the service history from the previous owner and I see he never had the radiator changed, so that's first up. I also have 90k on the lower ball joints(originals were changed under recall) so those are on the list. I need to do rear axle seals some time As well. Diffs, power steering and transfer case fluids could use a refresh.

I must be getting old because I'm more excited to do these things than I am to add fun parts [emoji1]

Anything else I should consider?

Well today is a sad day indeed for the 4Runner. I was driving up Highway 4 to Bear Valley to go snowboarding yesterday. The weather was perfect and the roads were clear. As I was heading around a long bend, I hit some black ice on the front passenger tire and the whole vehicle started to turn. As soon as I lost control of the car, I let go of the gas and held on thinking I would catch traction soon after. Well, the car kept going around and I regained traction as I was fully turned. I rolled once and landed back on the feet. All 4 of us in the car were completely uninjured minus being sore, so thank you 4Runner for saving our lives, and for all of the memories you've given me. Once I got it towed home, I put the spare on the driver front and drove it around the block one last time. I'm hoping to buy it back to pull the salvageable parts off, but it is pretty messed up. Consequently...I'm in the market for a new 4Runner. I am definitely glad to be alive and unharmed. Thank you everyone on here for the help and ideas along the way. I wouldn't have gotten this far without you all.

Here's some photos of the aftermath. :rip:

Looks crazy man, glad to hear everyone was able to walk away!

Hope your next 4Runner serves you well and that you can steal plenty from this one to get a head start on the next.

Radiator hoses were done at 216xxx, they seem very pliable still

Timing belt was 247xxx right before I bought it. Good call on the water pump.

Bored at work

Well, congratulations! I just saw you became a member. I guess the big thing about the group is we're not elitist's. It's not vehicle specific and it's a great group. We live by the definition of "Overlanding is Vehicle Dependent" We make no effort to try and further define it. I think you know there are core principles to abide by. Sharing information within the community and on here is key.

Here's a video about it. For me, this is what it's all about. I've always been an adventurer. I just so happen to have a 3rd gen and belong to this great community as well.

Well spoken..

Might be difficult for you to find out, but usually the water pump is replaced at the same time the timing belt is done. Most change the tensioner and the idler pulley as well.

Knocked out new LBJ's, Outer Tie Rods, Tundra 5100's, Toytec/Eibach Front springs, Toytec Superlex Rear springs, 16x10 -38 Black Rock 997 Type 8 wheels, and 305/70/16 Toyo Open Country MT's. Pretty successful weekend I'd say.

Looking at upgrading to these also...What are you impressions post-install?

Do it. The 231mm TBU is so much better than stock - more pedal feel AND more stopping power when you need it. I also upgraded to stainless steel lines front and rear to minimize any sponginess that's a fairly common complaint, but my brakes feel just as linear as stock (with no fade pretty much ever).

How much rubbing do you have with that setup?

Minimal during every day driving. Driver's front will rub slightly on the front bumper while backing up to the left. Haven't had a chance to do any flex testing yet though to see where those problem areas may lie.

When you go out to the parking lot and your T4R's ass is sagging more than normal, it's usually a flat tire. Completely flat tire.

With a hole on the inner sidewall big enough to stick a finger through.

How the hell this did not blow on me during my 1+Hr drive to the office this morning is beyond me. That should have been a bomb.

Maybe vandalism?

That's what I was hoping. I looked over the car fax and water pump was done around 60k. I looked over the reports from Toyota owners site and the work order says When the timing was done most recently it was 'timing belt only'. I do remember the original owner saying he took it to the dealer because his friend worked there so maybe the pump was done off the books *♂️

This was technically two weeks ago but I finally got around to installing my Curt rack. I spent a couple of weeks making the brackets, painting the rack, and sealing the joints.

Not vandalism...you hit something. Yes that sucks but from the weather checking...those babies were about ready to trade out anyway.

Well if anyone is interested, here is the video from the rollover on Sunday. Pretty crazy looking back at it now!

What happened? Was it lower ball joint failure? or lifted with a high center of gravity? Or did your right rear tire catch the edge of the road, loose traction to make you slide, then you got on dry pavement and the friction caught you and made you flip?
