What Did You Do To Your 3rd Gen Today?

I see several people here like the AT3’s a lot. I’ve never had Cooper’s so I can’t really judge for myself there, but I’ve had various BFG’s over the years on different vehicles and always had good luck. The AT3’s were going to be just shy of a grand all said and done, and I only paid a little more for the BFGs after finding a better deal (CostCo; gotta love CostCo). The main thing causing me buyers remorse on the Coopers was that - despite the sales guy telling me it’s good in the snow - it’s not as highly rated as the BFG in the snow. Maybe I am crazy; I’m sure that passenger tire rated AT3 rides nicer than the E-rated KO2 though.

I have AT3's and absolutely love them. With 16K on them now, they're still as quiet as day one. They're a perfect blend of a highway tire and light all terrain tire. I've had mine in the snow and had no issues of maintaining traction. The downside I can see to this tire is excessive wear. These lost quite a bit of meat in only 16K.

BTW, I bought mine from Discount tire for $590 installed (265-70-16).

Today I ordered new tires after doing lots of good, level-headed research on the topic... then preceded to have nearly instantaneous buyers remorse. I initially ordered the Cooper Discoverer AT3 (and I'm sure it IS a fine tire and all), but I don't know man... something just wasn't sitting right and I wasn't very excited after spending a fair amount of money on my beloved 4Runner; so I cancelled that and ordered 5 BFG AT/KO2's in 265/75/16. Am I crazy?

Tires are always a hard one. I can't comment on the AT3's, but I will say that I have been enjoying BFG KO2's for a few years now. I do a good amount of highway driving as it is my DD. They seem plenty smooth on the highway. They seem to do fine in the rain. I have had the back kick out a couple times in transitional turns. But I suspect it was not so much a tire traction issue, as a goofy Toyota "traction control" issue. They did pretty good in the snow and once aired down seem to soak up a bit of punishment and offer pretty good traction. Of course, the traction thing is area dependent. You might have different needs that I do for your area.

I have had them in 265/75/16 as well as 285/75/16, both E rated. I don't find them harsh. I would consider other tires the next time around. I might want to try a slightly more aggressive AT crossover, like a Cooper ST Maxx though.

Also I have heard very good things about Nitto Ridge Grapplers. But... They only come in the 17" variation, so that would be an additional PITA to switch to.

I think you will be happy with your KO2's though.

Are you guys talking about E1 or standard load tires? I just bought some falken wildpeaks in SL, and the tire shop seemed to prefer the KO2s in E1, but they were twice the price. I like the falkens for the first 50 miles, but am also wondering if I should have gotten something else?

I'm 2 years and 35k into my BFG KO2's. absolutely love them - they wear ridiculously well.

I'm 90% pavement princess so I spend my fair share of time on the hwy, and they're superb in every aspect.

Getting ready for round 2 of : shop ape VS rusty fog light mounting hardware.

I got me arse kicked yesterday, I under estimated my opponent so I changed out the driver door seal and did a PS fluid exchange so that I could feel like I accomplished something. ( fresh PS fluid makes a big difference )

I'm going to try to fit a dremel in there and cut away the speed nut that captures the mounting bolt on the lower bumper trim.

Went to the junkyard and found a set of coil bump stops for $20. I had to cut my original pair to fit my previous air bag setup.

My cv boots were leaking after the lift but they did not look torn so I replaced the OEM clamps with hose clamps for now. Will eventually replace with Oetiker style clamps.

Lastly I changed my oil and snapped a pic to call it a day. Hopefully my new tires will be here this week.

I know it's not the most important factor but I think those look good. Falken has been killing it for years in formula drift as well as King of the Hammers so they obviously know how to make great tires. Also, I like Falken as a company because they're a Japanese company that's invested in USA manufacturing (since they bought the Goodyear/Dunlop plant in Buffalo) just like Toyota. My choices from Costco were a bit more limited so I went with the BFG KO2 (which are only available in an E rated version), but I think you choose well.

Stretching my boots seems counter intuitive. Seems like this would bee a good mod if the convolutions of your boot are rubbing to the point of failure but not sure how it would be helpful if the ends of your boot are already stressed.

I only have a hundred miles or so since my lift but I will check tomorrow to see if my bellows are rubbing.

If you are lifted above 2" it is highly likely you will rub the 2 ribs closet to the diff. Hell I'm running at 3" with a diff drop and still rubbing them. They are only year old CVs though so I should be fine.

I got the front diffy refilled from when I lost fluid doing the CV axles 3 weeks ago, and since the metal shields were off I did an oil change. The window sticker from jiffy lube was dated 3 years and 25K ago, the oil looked like that might have been the last time it was changed. Nasty stuff coming out of the oil pan and of course I cheaped out and used inexpensive dino oil, but at least I used a Toyota filter ! LOL

The 2 skid plates, they bolt together where the 2 edges overlap but does that joint just "float" in space or should those bolts be long enough to thread into the chassis somewhere? I looked but didn't see anything. While waiting for the engine oil to drain out, I noticed that the 2 lower rad bolts were not installed. Luckily I had a few M10 bolts that fit. Makes me wonder why/when the rad may have been removed. It doesn't look brand new, but it definitely doesn't look 19 years old either.

Today I figured out why my map lights stopped working. First I checked the fuses, all good. I checked for power at the socket, all good. So I check the bulbs, both good, wait, what? Put them back in, works now, ok, put cover back on. Now they don’t work again. Turns out base of bulbs were not making a good connection with the contact point. Put a lot of dielectric grease on it, still works 20 miles and lots of potholes later.
TacoT4R that front end conversion is tight, I have been wanting to see that done.

Funny you should say, I also really like how they look on the truck. I'm definitely not expecting or planning to win any "badass offroad" awards (it's a DD after all), but I do like how the new Falkens make the truck look a little more rugged and a lot less "grocery getter".

I think I'll keep them, given how smooth and quiet they have been, no need to tempt luck!
