so what was your fix after 4 months, I have knock sensor code now

In my case since Im SC, the shop couldn't figure out why it kept throwing the code after installing new sensors and harness so they contacted other shops that do work on these rigs and they came up with the SC producing too much vibration to the motor. Reason why the sensor kept going off so what they came up with was a bracket off the alternator...install two sensors there, hook up the harness and BAM!!! no more code. They added two other sensor in the original location to cap off the holes but theyre not hooked up. Its weird I know, eventually ill get it fixed right but after not driving it for a while, i just wanted to drive the damn thing. I think the SC might need a rebuild in the near future, got it used from a friend.

Swapped out the little license plate lights (one was broken anyway) that came with the 4xInnovations bumper for something I won't have to take apart to change the plate. I wouldn't have minded something a little less protruding, but this will do.

I also got replacement sway bar bushings but the rain and rain and rain and rain is making me wait. Been driving it without the front sway bar for awhile and though it's not too bad I'll be glad to have it back on for the on-road stuff.

The hubby also picked up a can of the later version of azure blue pearl for me. Not the same color as mine but closer than the imperial jade green, I suppose. Gotta say, the green doesn't bother me...
If the rain stops before I give up and do the amphicar mod maybe I'll do something with that paint.

I have seen that as fix but is it really a good fix or just a placebo
I am in a major time crunch and thought about doing that "fix" after watching on youtube
but at 66 years old and still wanting to twist wrenches with wrench lubricant ( beer) I think im gonna do the REAL knock sensor fix before I hit a 3k trip from Albany Oregon to fairbansks Alaska
ive been there since Feb 1st...now I have to go get my 4runner. and bring it north...last thing I want is my truck jumping into limp mode in the middle of bum fu*k nowhere

I'm friggin sick of trying to get a second key for my 4runner (Immobilizer equipped Limited) . I'm going to end up pay $100 to get a clone of the valet because they seems to be the Only option short of a brand new ECU $$$$$, or "hacking" one specific chip on my ECU (hrm, lets risk cooking the whole thing).

Heads up, if you have a Master key (security light goes out IMMEDIATLY when you put the key in) and don't have a spare, save yourself the headache later and get a spare now. You can get the keys on ebay for $12/each (OEM, crappy knockoffs are about $8), my local dealer cut 2 keys from VIN/code for free but it's usually less than $5. For under $20 you could save yourself a MASSIVE headache.

What absolutely does NOT work:

The acc/brake tapdance (requires a master)
using Techstream (requires a master, nope you can *NOT* reset in Techstream on a '99 model)
using a generic "keymaker" that plugs into the OBDII (requires a master)

It's been an exceptionally wet 6 months, snow snow snow and now that it finally warmed up rain rain rain. Dodging storms to get anything done. At least water rights aren't an issue here.
I'm not mad about missing your snow, though the extra amount we had here last fall meant taking a break from the head gaskets to entertain our housebound neighbor (that's his window)..

Ha, I don't own a top hat and the only one around was on a snowman that was moving around singing about Frosties or something.

Progress is slowly happening on the tall camry highlander (because 4runner highlander in the driveway too), we got a 'new' head and that's on, cams are in, valve cover comes next, if it ever stops....raining....

Sub Woofer

Installed an 8" powered sub woofer that mostly fits under the driver's seat. Installation was the usual deal: disassemble the entire vehicle and route wires in impossible spots after removing plastic panels that break into pieces if you touch them.
Turned out OK though.

just got back form Alaska and need to get my 4runner up there....over the next week of so ( before I leave and take my 4runner) got to do knock sensors ( threw code 3 weeks ago), vc gaskets,( leaking) recon injectors, clean the MAF and IDC, why not while its apart, oil cooler gaskets and hoses, block heater, well don't know if I need the oil cooler stuff, but 30 bucks and im done and no worry and IM right there and 220k and need the block heater right next to it, LBJ's, ( 3rd set, guess I should slow down on gravel forest service roads OEM but I run hard) rear hatch struts, trans flush with new magnafine, flush power steering with removing the reservoir, and do that cool luggage rack extension so I can run a full rack and look stock, and taco whip...as my last job in the snow the fancy electric antenna would freeze and go no place
good thing I just retired ( but start a new job in Alaska June 1st) and have plenty of wrench lubricant (brewski)

love this forum and all the guidance, esp timmy and dr coffee to name a few

Valve cover gaskets, plugs, wires, pcv valve and grommet, clean throttle body... and lots of parts cleaning. My first time doing this and took most of the day. I have a check engine light now which should turn off in a few days.

I managed to put a deep scratch in the cladding around the fender on my 3rd Gen. Found the paint code and had NAPA mix up an aerosol can of 1D2 paint and grabbed a few sheets of sandpaper. I didn't sand out the scratch because I didn't want to go through the primer. The result is acceptable for a 343,000 mile vehicle.

The license plate position, and lights, are one thing that I'd change on my 4X Innovations rear swing out. It is the first thing to drag back there during transitions. Granted, mine sticks out a bit further with it being mounted off my jerry can holder. I really like your fix, and will probably do the same when the time comes for sure. I might see about raising the plate location altogether. I was thinking about picking up a light fixture assembly from a 2nd Gen 4Runner swing out. It's pretty much the same idea.

Makes sense on your drag, for me it's the hitch, then tire if steep enough. My husband jokingly says he's going to get a hatch from a 3rd gen Hilux Surf- the one that has the plate off to the left to accommodate a tire carrier.

Beautiful [MENTION=5345]habanero[/MENTION]! My aunt drove hers for right over 300,000 miles, then sold it for $1 to she and my uncle’s housekeeper. I think Ruthie put another 100,000 miles on it before losing the tranny at over 400,000 miles. Will make a good beater. I hate painting, rather smell gear oil all day long.

Minor maintenance on Saturday, time for an oil change. I only went 5K on the Rotella T6 this time,I was concerned that the higher detergent levels would make the oil full of crud. It looked perfect coming out.,I'll go back to a 10K interval.

The Toyota parts guy suggested a slightly longer filter, it fit without any issues. It didn't add much to the overall capacity but a bit more filtration can't hurt.

Go to drive it last night. Nothing. Can’t even unlock the doors with the remote. Finally get under the hood and find my four month old Autocraft battery is only holding 7.2 volts. Before jumping to conclusions I pull out the test light and yep, first parasitic drain on the 4Runner. On the charger presently but suspect it is on the radio circuit.

You could always do a hitch mounted stinger too, like the new Jeep JL folks are doing to protect the tail gate. Wouldn't be tough to fab something up.
