What Did You Do To Your 3rd Gen Today?

In the last two weeks I've re-built the starter solenoid and replaced the ABS actuator pump and bled the brakes on my '96. Also, had to replace the gas filler door lid spring.

in the year 1997 I purchased a new '98 4Runner.
in the year 2019, I finally replaced the shitty, torn and cracked leather on my 2 front seats.
They now look amazing.

I used these guys I found on ebay to purchase pre-sewn leather covers and new seat bottom foam. While I was at it, I added seat heaters since, well, I had the seats torn apart.

I would say these fit 98% and the construction is very good. The stitching seams don't precisely align from the seat back to the seat cushion but I doubt anyone else will notice. The new seat foams are a world of difference in comfort. I can't wait to go on a road trip!

I'm considering adding some acoustic sound deadening next and definitely need an upgrade to my suspension, wheels and tires.

I bought seat covers from these guys too, and was very happy. To answer panisome's question, the color match was so good that on the passenger seat I replaced only the bottom cushion (seat back was near perfect), and I can't even tell that one is 20 years older than the other..

I have fabric seats, but the foam seat back and seat have seen better days.

I heard a rattling sound coming from my newly purchased T4r. Upon inspection, I found out the flange on the muffler to the tailpipe has rusted out.



I cleaned off all the rust on the tailpipe & muffler flanges and it looks salvageable.


Would it be OK to weld this back together?

If you can afford it; take it a local muffler shop and ask them what it would take and what the cost would be for them to fix this right. What could it hurt?

You can get a good bolt in Walker from Rock for pretty reasonable.
I put one on a couple yrs ago , still looks good .

I think he meant "a good bolt on" as in a cat back walker exhaust. You'll need to know if you have a federal emissions exhaust (1 catalytic converter) or california emissions exhaust (2 catalytic converters).

Traced my exhaust leak and rattle, the exhaust pipe at the outlet end of the Walker Quiet Flow muffler rotted out, bought/installed in 2015. They're supposed to have a lifetime warranty but I need to find the receipt to file a claim.

Fixed my annoying window rattle! I've never been able to drive in my truck with the windows partially rolled down - the rattle was deafening. Looking at the glass in the window channel, the weatherstrip opening is much wider than the glass, allowing it to rattle:

I assume that the weatherstrip opened up over the years, allowing the rattle. Before buying an expensive new window frame weatherstrip, I wanted to try a cheaper solution.

I pulled the upper rear corner of the weatherstrip away from the door frame:

There is flap on the inside of the weatherstrip that you can lift up on:

I then took about a foot long section of windshield washer vacuum hose, and stuffed it behind the flap:

Made sure it goes in fully behind the flap:

Pushed the weatherstrip back onto the door frame. Now the weatherstrip hugs the glass nicely (without squeezing it too much):

I think it'd be a good idea to put a few dabs of adhesive on the vacuum hose to stick it to the weatherstrip and keep it from sliding down. You may also need to choose the diameter of the vacuum hose based on how much set there is in your weatherstrip.

Drove the truck to work today with the window partially open, and I could not believe the silence! I guess I got so accustomed to the awful noise right by my ear that I took it as normal. It is so wonderful to have nothing but wind noise when driving with the windows cracked open. Like a whole different car!

You can, but you'll have reweld the exhaust flange in the correct spot to bolt up to the walker exhaust. It's easier just to leave the cats alone until you have to replace them.
