Did Zuk quote you before hand? I keep meaning to email him. PO didn't really change diff fluid and it needs bearings and stuff that goes over my head. His website is really impressive.

Zuk quoted me for a true trac install and full bearing replacement etc and shipping to northern CA for less than $600, shipping as part of that number. I'm going his route as soon as all the pieces fall into place. Liked the way he talked, no nonsense.

Yeah, we've been emailing back and forth all week. His prices beat everything local by a few hundred. Labor was half what other shops were even if I pulled the 3rd myself.

Update on the 3rd member. Should have it back tomorrow.

The shop that set up the gears = garbage. Its a well known national chain.

Your backlash was a super wide .024"......should be .006"
To bring backlash back in spec I loosened up the one side 10 full notch holes....tightened the other side the same 10 notches.

A paint test revealed that the contact pattern is extremely shallow. I am surprised that you did not break some pinion teeth yet. The good news is I can reset the depth to a much stronger depth. It should be quiet.

One of the big adjuster wheels was mis-threaded in the slot. Fixed.

More gems.

I threw out your flange...it was badly scarred. They did not even set the pinion bearing preload anywhere near correct...they used too much shim. The bearings were basically 0 preload with a slight wobble. I removed about .006" to get some preload to show up.

I'm just glad I didnt pay for the gears the 1st time (I bought the 4runner with the gears installed already) or I would be pissed.

On a side note, the only thing he charged extra for was a new pinion seal not the complete tear down and reassembly. Zuk is a really cool guy to deal with. Plus he sent me tons of pictures throughout the process.

Took it on a grocery run...

In the parking lot, Saw an older (late 80's/early 90's) Toyota pickup in great shape with the license plate "5VZ YOTA" ... Also noticed a slight body lift...

On the way out I ran into the guy and a brief conversation confirmed: he had not only a 3.4 conversion, but also a supercharger, same as me. What are the odds?

I did an oil change with the filter. Then, I started working out a way to mount three bikes on the top. A $60 amazon cart later, I should have some brackets on Wednesday, and on Friday, new front floor mats (finally).
