What did you do with your classic T4R today?

Well. I wanted to drive a trail with some other 4Runner aficionados this weekend, and my clutch started acting up. Upon further research, my valve covers (swapped 3.4) were leaking. So, decided to tackle valve covers and bring the 4Reak into work to do the clutch on a lift, since it's possible valve cover leak will f*ck up the new clutch.

Then the fun happened. Pulled off supercharger and valve covers to then discover I was one washer/bushing/grommet shy from the valve cover bolts... Ahh shit. In the engine? Under a cam? Wtf???

Had to go with it and put it back together based on time constraints. And then, at the 95% completed mark: BOOM! Found the damn washer resting on the frame. Whew!

Lesson: be f*ckin careful, extra careful, SUPER careful when messing with an opened up engine. No matter how many times you've done the job, humble pie is very bittersweet...

Clutch should go in tmrw.

Sometimes you're the windshield, sometimes you're the bug...

Had free time at work, so smashed home, snagged the 4Runner to do the clutch. 2 hrs to get the trans out, then pilot bearing fought me for a solid hour. New AISIN clutch installed, trans back in, 100% installed. Except it wouldn't disengage. Foot to floor, pedal feels great, minimal free play, and won't go into gear. Not even close. F*ck. Pull trans back out in literally 20 minutes due to my blind rage, hoping I didn't install clutch disc backwards. Nope. Installed correctly. "T/M side" printed on disc, and it's facing transmission. Wtf???? Installed old clutch (plenty of life left, it just had a chatter) and used a new flywheel with a clean cut. New pilot and throw out bearings. After install worked perfectly again.

Anyone have issues with AISIN clutches? Could this one be printed wrong? I'm calling the supplier today or next week to see what the deal is. Just a f*ckin waste of time.

Installed a twin stick over the weekend. With a lockrite in the front this should help navigating the tight confines of the shopping center parking lots here in SC. 2 wheel low is going to be bad ass in the drive thrus. #mallcrawling

Fellow SC 4runner! My tools tend to collect in the passenger floorboard as well.

Once I was bullshitting with someone when installed a new clutch disc and sure enough I threw the f*cker in backwards. Somehow also removed the tranny with incredible speed the second time hahahah.

Went to the local Pick a Part hunting for front shocks, a front parking brake cable, a drivers seat and a spare tire off the one 4Runner they have (a 1995). I had already got the fan, fan shroud and rear shocks off it a few days ago, but ran out of daylight.

Found the shocks, but the stud broke off the top of both of them. The driver's seat was already gone, too. I did get the front parking brake cable and a hood release cable off it though, but the spare was no good.

Wandered through the yard a bit and found an Isuzu Rodeo with a pretty meaty tire. It was the vehicle's spare, mounted front right. Looked in the back for the lug wrench and scored 3 quarts of Valvoline premium 5w30. B-b-b-bonus!

So, a decent, almost matching spare and two cables for $35, plus the oil which they didn't charge for. I'm calling that a good haul. Put everything on when I got home, and it all works.

It's amazing what a high level of fatigue and rage will accomplish when repeatedly performing an annoying ass task right?
I'm still pissed about it haha

Trying to figure out where to go next. I still need to do wiring for the manual swap, valve covers are dumping oil (don't want to crack into that until I have what I need to do a lash adjustment), interior needs to be put back together and deloused, still have to figure out the front diff so 4wd works, and God knows that it's got electrical issues that are driving me insane that I need to figure out.:flamethrwoer2:

3.0? If so, valve adjustment is incredibly intrusive compared to just valve covers. These have the spacer type "pucks" where you need to remove the camshaft to replace. Which includes taking the timing components off as well. Not to mention, entire valve adjustment includes measuring all gaps, then on any that are out, you need to remove the cams, pucks and measure those pucks. Then add/subtract the difference to get what gap you desire and order from Toyota. Huge pain. And they don't tend to go out of spec for a very very long time.

I'm not being rude, just informing. It's a lot of work for a very minor issue overall. When I checked mine on my old engine at like 200,000 miles I think one single one was out, and was over by literally .001" (one thousandth!). Forget all that. Slap on the covers and save some money on adding oil.

About 2 hours having to be super quiet with my daughter sleeping a wall away...

Off to ZUK tmrw for a true trac and rebuild!

Soooooo f-ing stoked!!!

Was poking around under truck removing the spare tire carrier and noticed this...on both sides! Don't know how I didn't notice sooner but the only time I drive it is to go wheelin

That's why leafs have so many layers duhhhh redundancy for just such an instance.

Kidding... Should probably fix that at some point.

Thanks for the advice. I'm fixing the oil leak now actually and I'm just going to inspect the clearance. Toyota apparently has a tool that allows you to change the shims without removing the camshaft. The engine has a lot of build up and doesn't seem to have gotten many oil changes. So I figured I should at least check. My concern isn't noise (although it does sound noisy in the top end) it's that I've heard these engines have an issue with stretching exhaust valves and having them burn due to a lack of clearance. Getting that intake off was a pain after 26 years btw.

Dude. One of my least favorite jobs. A damn Wearhouse of vacuum hoses, hard lines, clamps etc. not the best design.

Good for you for your diligence.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that this is the first time that this has been apart. Most of the hoses are at the consistency of uncooked macaroni. The same can be said for the plastic wiring loom cover. Only broke a couple of things so far so I think I'm alright?.... lol
Thanks for your support!

So I've been chasing a exhaust leak for quite some time. I replaced the gasket and it helped, but still had a leak. So my first thought the manifold is warped, great. I pull it off to inspect and look what I found...what in the f@@$?!
Some one had attempted to weld a cut-off bolt to the bottom of the manifold and failed miserably. So now about to finish buttoning up the new one.
