What did you pay for GPS update?

I took my 13 Limited in for 45,000 mile service and inquired about GPS update. The price was $299 plus I had to wait a week for the update to arrive (which I found weird since there were numerous banners touting GPS updates in service area).

Is this update I can purchase online my self and install? $299 seems pretty steep IMO

I'm interested as well. It's written on the SD card in my '15. So it should be pretty darn easy to just pop the sd card in a computer and update the maps. I never use them because the whole nav system is kind of a joke.

Now if someone writes software to hack the head unit so it will use google maps from my phone - I'd pay $300 for that.
 
That's ridiculous! Put that money towards a Garmin with lifetime updates. I can update mine plugged into my laptop in, oh, under 3 minutes. (Forever).
 
I refuse to pay for these "upgrades"! Google Maps is free, updated regularly, AND my wife can use Google Maps while I'm driving around lost in bad neighborhoods where I don't dare stop so I can fiddle with trying to get the factory unit to do what I want!

Automakers really need to quit trying to design their own proprietary systems. They need to just put in a unit that will allow the cell phone to run everything, just show the graphics/allow input on the stock screen to control the phone and be done. Everyone then gets whatever functionality they want in their car, and best of all, they don't have to relearn a new list of screens/functions to use it.

Just my two cents.
 
Toyota already sells vehicles in other markets with exactly what we want. This is a dash from a Toyota model in Taiwan: (it's built in Nexus 7 with a special software package to interface with the Toyota vehicle)

In my experience, Google Maps or Waze provide more accurate navigation details. I haven't used my built-in NAV or Garmin Nuvi in at least 3 years.

GAH!!! Why must the US always get hosed when it comes to cool stuff and vehicles?

It's just bidnit. It's high margin. Ppl want, ppl will pay. No diff than a TRD shift knob.

It will change when no one buys it anymore, not before.

An onboard, proprietary navi disqualifies a vehicle for me.
 
Sometimes you can find backups online. It can be useful to back up your DVD in case it gets scratched when doing some serious off-roading :yo:

But maybe the Toyota GPS just sucks no matter what. Recently it was trying to send me through some bad areas in Detroit, but Google Maps had a much better route.

Because Toyota would price itself out of the market in the US if it put all this fancy stuff in the cars. People won't pay Lexus prices for Toyotas in this country. Or Mercedes prices for Lexus.

Toy Nav system

I am so glad I ordered my T4R TE without NAV. It wasn't easy to find one without this $405 option so I ordered the vehicle I wanted from Toyota. I don't mind waiting 10 to 12 weeks for my truck to come from Japan.
I knew there was a better system out there in a hand held device. I'll check out the Garmin. And the Toy system will be obsolete in a few years, when the next gen NAV or iPhone comes along.

Just buy yourself a nice phone holder (or tablet) and use Google maps. You get traffic updates and rerouting for life. No need to ever hook it to a laptop. Plus you get voice command capabilities. Personally once I get the money I plan on removing the Toyota Nav unit and installing Android head unit.

There are ways to download updates for your maps from Torrent sites but again not as accurate as the stuff you have on your phone. JMO
 
just don't get the 7" garmin. just a tad bit heavy and unwieldy to use on the bean bag mount.

stick with the 5" or 6" from experience.


but I have to say that 7" is great for older eyes but blocks quite a bit when on the dash in the middle unless you position it just right.
 
I got the GPS...mine is worthless. I use waze instead. Traffic info is inaccurate and you can't change the address when the car is moving, not even your passenger. The weather channel app is stupid too - if I'm outside driving, I know what the weather is like. Further, it's always 30mins behind.
