this is just the first price they quoted me for a 03 4runner sport, v6, with sunroof, double decker cargo shelf, basic radio w/cd, color coded cladding. Their sale price is 30,995. I haven't countered yet on that price but told them I wanted more for my trade (I think my 98 Camry with 48k miles is worth more than 6,600). They located this one elsewhere.

They also located a Imperial Jade green one with the gray cladding and similar options for the same price. I really like the green but not the cladding.
They also told me they could instal the alarm system for $359 more.

Like I said I haven't countered their price on the 4Runner yet. what do you think would be a fair price and what should I counter with to get close to the fair price?
Thanks for the input.

gaslight,

In my opinion, you can do better for the model that you descibed. I did much better than that on a 4x4 V8 Sport w/ Bose changer, sunroof, leather, and a few misc items (cargo system, floor mats, etc.) Have you shopped around with other dealers? In my shopping, I used the Edmund's TMV as a guide for pricing, In my experience, however, Edmunds is not extremely accurate as far as options go and they don't seem to take into account regional pricing differences. I assume you are looking at 4x2s.? As far as the cladding goes, in my opinion, it looks good on some colors, not as good on others.

Good luck w/ your purchase, it's a great SUV!

I'm looking at the 4x4. That was just his first offer. I didn't feel like staying there any longer so I made up an excuse to get out of there. Give myself some time to think. They are trying to screw me on my trade in. I want to work on that first. One deal at a time. Time is on my side. I could keep driving that car for years.
I was thinking closer to $28900 for the 4Runner but I need to check into the pricing more.

Exactly! Don't let the dealer combine the trade with the purchase. Keep each transaction separate. I got $3100 for a '95 Corolla with 108K miles on the clock, I am sure you could get more for your Camry.

The buying advice I've read suggests to not even mention a trade until you've agreed on a price. In my latest experience, the deal was combined and it took me a bit more time to work backwards through the numbers and see what kind of deal I was really getting.

Hey Sac State, how do you like the Borla exhaust? Does it add any power to the v8?

Don't even mention a rebate. Drive your best price and then discuss rebate. The rebate is just that, a rebate from the 'true' cost of the vehicle, not the 'inflated' price the dealer wants you to pay.

I love the Borla, from what I read in the Borla literature, the system should add 14-15hp and I have an aFe re-useable air filter that came stock for another 5-7hp.

It is all academic. The V8 is more than adequate powerwise without the exhaust, but I really enjoy the performance and instant response, not to mention the gurgle and Toyota warranty. :D

That V8 is what won me over to the 4Runner. I was thinking about adding the exhaust at my local dealer. How would that impact my warranty?

If you are going for the cat-back Borla, I would not think it would void any warranty, especially since Toyota offers this option (DE10) as OEM. The only 'mechanical' part of the install I am told is the replacement of the cat-back gasket between your stock cat and the Borla muffler. All hanger points are stock and I have read it should take one hour in your garage to install with common tools. Word of note, your engine/ECU will need time to 'adjust' to the decreased back pressure. Your vehicle could run rough, idle high, shift hard for a few hundred miles until the computer adjusts itself. Once adjusted, it is sweet!

Talked to the Stealer a few times this week. they found a Green Sport V6 with the gray cladding. It has sunroof, running boards, cargo tray(shelf), rear spoiler and floor mats. List 33,549. Sale price 30,459.
I told him I found a couple of invoices on line that were much lower than his invoice. He said you can't belive them because they don't include everything like advertising.
My point is that it seems to be an unpopular color and maybe thats why they are dropping it on the 04 plus it has the gray cladding that a lot of people didn't like and are no longer producing(correct me if I'm wrong). I think this car has been sitting for a while on the lot and the longer it sits the more money they lose. Shouldn't I be able to get this much cheaper?
I like the Green just not crazy about the gray cladding.
I thought someone here got a Limited for 33something. Shouldn't I be able to get this one for 28,500 to 29,000?

In my opinion, your in the right ballpark at 28-29k based on the vehicle you describe. The vehicle that I purchased had an MSRP of +36k and I bought it for < 30k. I'm not sure that's the norm; buying the last day of the month helped. Also, I genuinely went into the deal expecting to not get the price that I wanted and to leave the dealer to go an purchase an ML350. To be sure, I made the dealer well aware of that.

Yeah the dealer asked me when I planned on buying. You know like this week or month.
I told him "I could buy something this week or wait till next month or even later because there is nothing wrong with my car and I could easily drive it for years to come. I'm not in a rush".
I'm going to a different dealership tomorrow to see what they can do for me.

went to another dealer. He was gonna take 2k off MSRP and give me 6k for my car. He didn't want to deal. I didn't like the price they printed up on the computer and told him I was thinking closer to 28,500. He didn't like that and didn't even try to counter. He asked me where I got my prices for invoices then later said he would entertain a REASONABLE offer. Gee I did make a offer. The assistant sales manager got up and walked away leaving me with this young wet behind the ears sales associate. He wrote down the numbers on his card but I corrected the numbers because he put down the MSRP. He told me the extra 2k was for my trade not that they were coming down 2k from MSRP. I corrected him and pointed out the paperwork and said you only offered me 6k for the trade and you took 2k off MSPR. Trying to make me think they were giving me 8k for my car. Their deal wasn't any better than the first stealer. I'm hoping that some incentives are going to come out soon since production on the 03 has stopped and the 04s are on the way here by September.

Well the second dealer I went to sent me a survey via email. I let their corporate office know what happened and that I didn't like it. The reply I got said due to other surveys like mine that assistant sale manager is no longer part of the management team. :D :dancin: :jump: :moon:
