What do you look for to see if a T4R has 4:88's

Hello all,

It's been 7 years since I have been here, and I am looking to acquire a 2nd gen T4R, but want to know where to look/how to tell if the rig came with the 4:88 gears from the factory? I know if the vehicle had the factory option of 31x10.5's they had them, but over time people swap stuff out, and I was wondering if there is somewhere on the rig I can check pretty easily?

The gear code is G144. You'll find it on the plate on the firewall in the engine bay.

Don't quote me on this, but I think a second gen had to be automatic with factory 31s (not dealer 31s) and the tow package. They're not common.

To verify what gears you have (never know what the PO has changed)you can also jack up the rig and spin the tire 2 full revolutions and count how many revolutions the drive shaft makes. Make sure you mark the drive shaft to make it easier to count, I think for 4.88s the drive shaft needs to rotate 5 revolutions...

Not to hijack the thread but I have a 89 Dlx automatic. What stock gears do I have? 4.10s? what would I need to go to so I can get just a little more power without losing gas mileage?

Probably 4.30, but check your vin plate and see Hyde's link for the code. Swapping in a manual would cost less and get you more useable power and better mileage to boot. I wouldn't bother regearing unless you're putting on 33s or bigger.

Darkside to break it down
The "Letter" is the is the ring size, the two digit number is the ratio based on a chart from yota, the last number will be a "2" or a "4" indicating the number of pinions.
This is my 95" SR5 has
G=8" 14=4.875 4= 4 pinions
I hope this helps its on the drivers door jam. Its not exactly easy to find I will take a pic and post it to assist you.

Hyde's link upthread breaks it down pretty well. Short story, early 4cyl diffs had two fins or "pinions" on the third to strengthen it. The so-called turbo or V6 diff has four of those pinions.
