What do you make of this noise?

Noise showed up over night, I was thinking it might be the power steering pump going out? But it almost sounds like unlubricated rubber on metal sliding. Only happens when I turn the wheel, and happens both hot and cold. I added some power steering fluid (going to flush it this weekend), and the noise didn't seem to change.

Have you tried turning the steering wheel all the way to one end, like you making a U-turn? Do you hear a sound?

P/S belt is loose, tight it.

Don't replace your power steering pump. These pumps are hard to kill (you can kill it by running without oil, but you'll notice if there is no oil when you try to turn the steering wheel).

Yeah, I've made a bunch of U-turns since noticing the noise, nothing unusual to be heard really. I mostly hear it going under 20mph and at idle. I'll check the belts tomorrow. Thanks for the tip!

I replaced all of my ball joints, tie rods, and lca's less than 1,000 miles ago. Could the lubrication really have worn off that fast??

did they come with grease zerks and did you lube them when installing...or do they come sealed? possible ball joint on the upper control arm also if not replaced

**i just seen you said you replaced all ball joint sorry but this sounds exactly like the noise that comes from unlubed tie rods/ball joints, do you have a mechanics stethescope by chance? can get at sears for like 20 bucks, if not try and take a long screw driver and put your ear to the end of it at each tie rod end or ball joint while someone turns the wheel slowly and you should be able to hear your loud squeal to verify the area of the noise

Damn, ok I'll definitely have to get right on that. Don't want to be driving around with the possibility of a ball joint failure.

you can try and jack up the front end and turn the wheel but the noise probably will not be there so most likely you will need to do it with the wheels on the ground,

I'm still leaning toward a belt or your pulley bearing going out. You can hear it sitting in front of the engine, but when you turn it it gets worse.

That, or the pump. 16yo truck, probably getting ready to go.

Unless they gave me free LBJs when the dealership did the control arms then they are the same. Yeah might be a bearing, I should note the sound is only coming from the driver's side.

not true...why wouldnt you be able to align it? the squeak isnt from a loose joint, which im assuming why "you wouldnt be able to align it" its from moisture/dryness/lack of lubrication IF it is from a joint (not neccessarily meaning its wore), and your not always going to get just a clicking noise. if its a failed power steering pump your usually going to get a groan or whine noise, and if you can only hear it from the left side of the vehicle i'd start checking that side, either way best bet get a stethescope to better pinpoint the noise

If its the TREs or the BJs, they WON'T align it. It's a liability issue with places.

If the front end isn't right, they won't touch it. They check all that before they do an alignment.
