What do you think about this T4R I'm Considering?

Hey gang, I've been looking for a Gen3 to use as dedicated backcountry trail driver in both dry and snowy conditions and seems like most of the stock ones in nice condition (130-200K miles) are in the $5000-$6000 range.

A fellow member (thanks IBall), pointed this one out to me which is not too far away that seems to have everything I would ever need plus some. On a stock rig, I figure by time I do a little lift, put some new MT's, replace the timing belt, water pump, etc I'm going to be in it another grand or two so going for one that's been done already might make sense even if it's a little out of my budget (I could tighten the belt elsewhere I suppose).

Does a T4R with these mods require any more costly regular maintenance that a lesser modified one would? I'm really looking for a reliable rig I can drive 10-25 off-road miles a weekend without having to tinker with it too much.

I already talked to this guy that seems sincere and says he is meticulous about performing required maintenance and has also installed a transmission cooler to it as well. A little odd that he did all this work and is now selling, but did it as a project and is now looking to do it to a Land Cruiser.

Assuming everything looks good , what do ya think about going for this rig that is already done up to my liking? Thanks everyone, I really do appreciate all the advice I've been getting.

Toyota 4runner 4x4 Lifted & Locked

That seems like a really good price actually. Between lift, tires/wheels, front and rear lockers, sport model, all maintenance done….That is actually a score IMO. I'd check for rust, look for any leaks or weeping seals and make sure its a clean title, besides that I would buy for sure.

I liked that rig a lot. It looks well maintained and clean, in the first pic you can tell it needs a good buff of the paint. New MT's, timing belt, water pump, etc is going to be more then $2,000. Buying a built rig, especially one taken care of like that one, is going to be a great financial decision. Some people prefer to do everything themselves though and start with a stock rig, it's all opinion based. No modified rigs don't take up any more real maintenance then a stock one though.


If you do happen to purchase that 4Runner, I'd be interested in trading you differentials. I have an air locker in the rear only and would like one in the front. However, I believe our gear ratios are different, so we would have to swap both diffs. Only if you buy it, and only if you want to make some money back on the deal.

I tend to avoid modded vehicles when buying just because the chances the previous owner beat on it a little more are a little higher.

I think that's a great price and it looks pretty clean. Funny how things are worth more in parts then as a whole.

Believe me, I would love to find a clean stocker and have all the work done myself, but to be honest (for time and money constraints) the only way I am going to get into a fairly capable off-roader is to take over someone else's project and go from there.

I'm sure there will be many critics because I didn't do it on my own, but I don't want to do something half-a$$ because I ran out of funds and end up with a partially done wheeler that never gets completed properly.

Looks good to me.
Buying a stock rig and then doing all those same mods would cost a LOT more.
The ARB lockers and onboard air alone would probably be 2500 minimum.

Having been looking a lot recently I think there's better options. He doesn't mention in steering component, ball joints, tranny cooler or anything like that. I think any 3rd gen you get into you should be prepared to spend $500-$1000 in maintenance to give yourself a good baseline. Also he calls it a car

There will usually be critics with no matter what you do in life. No time to waste on them. I'd say if you're looking for a built one, that one looks pretty clean and functional.
