What do you tow? (pics)

New to the Forum: April 2010

Howdy gang,

I have a question. We are looking to upgrade from our 1800 lb pop-up trailer to a 3500 pound trailer. I understand that I will need to upgrade the attachments on my hitch, but I am reading conflicting opinions on what the 4runner can safely tow.
We have a 2008 4Runner 4.7L V8 Sport Edition with the tow package and Prodigy brake controller. The V8 is rated to tow 7000lbs, but we are looking for a camper that is MAX 3600 pounds. Some people on the forum say 3500lbs is too much for the 4runner, but others have had no problem. What say you? You can e-mail me at [email protected]

Weight?

Hi RVARunner,

Which is heavier? Boat or Ford wagon?
Also, what is the totoal weight of the boat and trailer?

I get the impression on some posts that as soon as I put a tennis ball on the hitch, I should switch to a 1-ton diesel, as some don't think the V8 4Runner is made for towing.

SoCal, with your V8 you'll be fine if you keep it under 4500lbs and 21ft. Bigger than that you'll get uncomfortable. Use a WD hitch with sway control and take it easy.

The boat by far. The whole rig you see there weighs about 4,200 lbs. Probably a little more with stuff in the boat. It usually has 450 lbs. of lead weight in it too. So you are looking at about 4700-4800 lbs. I tow it with my V6 regularly and have no problems. It isn't the fastest setup in the world, but as long as you are conscious of your surroundings, don't beat on the car, and use your parking break you should be fine. Chumpcar itself weighs 1800 pounds and idk about the trailer, but certainly less than the other rig.

P.S. just to clarify, as I said, I only have a V6.

I tow a 20' travel trailer with the family, loaded to the max with generator, kids, etc. I have the V8 Sport Edition 4x4 with K&N intake and fully synthetic oil. Does great, had to keep it in 4th against the wind through Palm Springs once, but up mountains, it kicks a** for the size it is I can't complain.:hatsoff:

Sold the old 19' hybrid and picked this up. 26' and 5500lbs loaded. Found a good deal on a Hensley Arrow hitch to eliminate any potential sway problems as well. The T4R towed it home like a champ.

Another recent aquisition. 1990 Airstream 32' Land Yacht. A deal I couldn't pass up for a rare piece of history. Pretty much the T4R max and my T4R wasn't happy, won't be dong it again, but it was good enough to drag it an hour to the storage facility where it will stay until I decide what to do with it.
