What do you use to remove your oil filter cap?

I would like to know what type of tool y'all are using to remove the oil filter cover for your 4Runners. I have tried a couple of different removal sockets. One was a 64/65 mm plastic socket that was just a little too large - unless I really pushed on it, it would not grab the housing correctly. The other one was a 65mm stamped metal socket that I had to basically hammer onto the housing...and then when I got the housing off, I realized that I would not have to cut the cup off of the housing - that was a lot of fun...

The good news is that on the latest oil change, when I went to remove the "drain plug", the whole housing spun off - I just put a 2 litre bottle around the filter housing, then spun it off until it and the oil fell into the bottle...

Anyway, I see some cast sockets on Amazon, but I would very much appreciate your input on what you are using, so I can get the right tool once and for all.

You need a metal 64mm filter wrench.

What's an oil filter cover? Are you saying it's no longer a canister but actually comes apart, like they used to do in the '40's? That's really stupid! I have an old 1978 Yamaha motorcycle that uses a filter like that and I have to take it apart and replace the insides. It was a big advance when they came out with filter cartridges in later years.

I picked one up at the dealer parts dept when I bought my first oil and filter. They have it listed on the receipt at a p/n 02485 canister wrench, $13.63

I have used it twice already and in a few minutes I will be going out to do my 15k mile oil change with it.

Bought mine at the Toyota dealer when I bought half a case of filters, gave it to me for like $9.00. Cool thing is it fits ALL my Toyotas. That was a big Wow, not having to buy one for each vehicle.

I use the same style socket that's shown in the excellent "how to", but it's darn tight on the filter cover - too tight to take it off later...

I've found these Assenmacher Specialty Tools TOY 640 Oil Filter Socket Wrench for Toyota/Lexus : Amazon.com : Automotive but haven't had a chance to order one yet and try it out.
