What does "SR5" mean?

As I thought about removing or replacing my SR5 emblems today I thought, "what the heck does SR5 stand for anyway?" I know it's a mid-level option package, but is it an acronym? Is it just some code like BMW or Infiniti has decided to use recently for no apparent reason? Anybody have some insight?

Sport Rally 5 (speed) is what I thought it's derived from.

SR5 means Base model.

It meant Sport in the old days... but those days are long gone, now you have "cheapo model, cheap model we charge you extra for, and "luxury" model we charge you for but don't provide for." Hope that clears things up.

The SR5 does stand for Sport Rally 5spd, and was introduced long before the Tacoma, so ignore that ridiculous explanation in that Taco World thread referenced above.
SR5 was introduced as an upgraded trim level over the base DX/DLX model. One of the upgrades was from the then standard 4 spd to a 5 spd.

The first 4Runners had two trim levels, the base trim and the SR5, and originally it was only five speeds that got the SR5 badges, ALL the automatics were base trim. At some point that changed, not sure exactly when but you can find late model second gen SR5s with automatic transmissions. The third gen's Sport was an option package add-on to the SR5 trim level, and then they added the Limited trim level over the SR5. At some point after that they deleted the now-unnamed base trim and that left the SR5 badge on the bottom of the stack.

This discussion reminds me of when I was a teen. My younger brother had a Ford Escort "L", and we would always ponder what the "L" stood for: Luxury, Limitless, Limited, Lavish, Lively, Lean, Locomotion, Local, Lucky, Lesbian, Luckless, Letdown, Lame, Lament, Lemon, Lavatory, Liability, Lawsuit, Landfill. In the end, we learned that it stood for LOSER.

To add more confusion, my '94 is considered an SR5, yet only has 4 speeds. At least nowdays the 5 speed part rings true.

EDIT: Unless you have a V6 03-04 SR5, it still has a 4 speed..

This, the only reason I settled on the SR5 after owning a Sport was that I was able to rip out and change all the cheap stock crap in the interior and put in what I want to make it more luxurious.

Honestly, among trim packages....I don't find any of the features offered from the Sport or Limited to be deal makers...aside from maybe the seat heaters, but those only come with leather which I didn't want.

Before 01' it was meant to be the Sporty trim that was above the base with not as many standard luxuries as the Limited. The "cool" trim you could say. In 2001 the base model was phased out making the SR5 the cheap-o base model with the Sport Edition being the "new" SR5. The Sport Edition was phased out in 2010 for the Trail Edition to be the present day equivalent to an old SR5. To sum it up, the meaning changes depending on the vintage.
