When gas prices go up, people start to use lower octanes because they get pissed about the prices, but don't realize that it is STILL only a few bucks more for the higher octane, even though prices might have gone up 30 cents.

93 Octane is no better than 87 Octane. It all boils down to what your engine is designed to use. I always run 87 Octane from any of the major oil companies.

Now .......cheap gas.......I do not buy gas from a no name store.

So.....lets say from Chevron.......there is no difference in the "quality" of the 87 and 93 Octane.

But hey.......given that I work for a major oil company.......you 93 Octane guys keep on buyin it........and the stock will keep on goin up.

I have been putting Shell 93 octane in my 4Runner since I got it last November. I would like to point something out to everyone. I read a lot of different threads on a lot of different auto forums and I have noticed a lot of people saying things along the lines of, "with gas prices THIS high I would never put premium fuel in my car". Or maybe things like, "I used to put premium in my car, but now I don't because of the high gas prices". Let's look at some math. Say regular is at $1.00 per gallon and premium is at $1.20 (premium is usually around $0.20 higher than regular). This means that those buying the premium gas are paying a 20% premium (pun intended). Ok, so lets say gas goes to $2.00 per gallon for regular and premium is at $2.20. This means that you are now paying just a 10% premium for the premium gas. So, in essence, as the price of gas increases, the guilt I have for buying premium decreases because relatively speaking, premium gas gets "cheaper" as the price of regular increases.

*You're* missing my point. I was not trying to justify putting in 93. I was trying to explain that it becomes less and less expensive on a relative basis when regular increases.

For all of you putting anything higher than 87 in your 4Runner, my only question is why? As high as gas prices are you think everybody would want to save money but some of you all are putting 93 in your 4Runner.. that's crazy, that wasted money adds up. Hell with all that wasted money on higher gas you could probably buy brand BFG tires in a year... We own Toyota 4Runners, not Lexus, not BMW, but 4Runner's...
 
Unlike what the oil companies want you to think, higher octane gas isn't "better" than lower, it simply is higher octane, which requires higher compression for detonation. It's necessary in high compression engines, but putting it a lower compression engine doesn't necessarily increase performance.

The reason why high compression engines knock with low octane gas is that they detonate too early, and therefore the ECU slows the engine timing to compensate.

Manual says '91 Octane (but research Octane 87)' or something like that which honestly, I don't understand what it means. I took it to mean that 87 is ok.

Just found it. Here is the quote from the manual:

Select Research Octane Number 91
(Octane Rating 87) or higher.

Q: What's with the octane ratings on new cars?
My new Toyota Avalon user guide calls for 87 or higher, but in parenthesis it says research octane number 91.

A: When you fill up at your local gas station, go ahead and pump 87-octane gasoline into your Avalon. The research octane number in the owner
 
i know this is an old thread

87 in the V8. I mix in a higher octane once in a while when it's cheap. As you probably already know, I havent in a while. hahaha...
