this is very important. make sure you REALLY know what you'll do with it.
most people will regear for their current tires(33's) and see the difference it makes, and then realise...they could now run 35's, and it would only be as bad as the 33's and stock gears.
i would bet in less than 5 years, if you keep the runner, you'll be rolling on 35's.
so, that said, my vote is for 5.29's:hatsoff:
well my son uses it to drive back and forth from school, 1 or 2 times on the highway a week, and the occasional trail ride every now and then :lookout:
i would like to run 5.29s but ive heard they arent to well for highway use. for now i will stay with 33s but who know maybe i might run some 35s in the future:biggrin2:

solid axle or IFS? 4.88's are probably fairly easy to find in junkyards from auto 4runners. Guess I shouldn't say all the autos but that's left for someone else that knows more of the subject.

I ran 5.29s and 33 inch tires on my '86, 22RE/auto, and it was fine on the road. The gearing in the manual is a little different, so if you're sure you'll never go to 35s I'd aim for 4.88s. If you think you might want to upsize down the road, do 5.29s.

ha I couldn't remember if your 86 was IFS or not. Based it on that. incorrectly

as for what gears to go with just get 4.88 if you drive it daily. 5.70 if you want a mean trail truck end of story

I have a 85 5speed 22re with 33's and 5.29's the freeway is fine at 60-65mph but i wouldn't run 70 or higher 3800 rpm at 65mph if your sticking to 33's then 4.88's i plan on 35's at least. 5.29's around town is nice and peppy depends also where you live hills of colorado/ or the plains of the mid west if you have big steel bumpers and carry 200 pounds of tools and parts around ?

what gears do you have now, 4.55? Im just guessing. for me its about a 200rpm difference between 4.55 and 4.88 in 4th and 5th gear with 33s on both. according to kid's cool little calculator there.
31's and 4.55s are within 20rpm if I went to 33's and 4.88s. Im gonna find me some 4.88s. If thats the case with you, it will move like stock again

You mean 4 56's?
Depends on what your plan is for the truck. Like others have said, if you plan on keeping the 33's, then 4 88's are best. If you want to move up to 35's, then 5 29's.
