what gears???

if its still stock, they would be 4.10's.

4.88's would put it back to almost stock with the 33's. it would be a drastic difference.

im running 35's, and 5.29s, and can still pull 20+mpg if i drive carefully.

4.88 gears with a 4 cyl and 5 spd will put your engine back into it's normal operating range. You will regain the MPG and power you had when running stock tires. You get back what lost. No magical increases beyond that.
 
I'm just gonna go ahead and stop talking. I don't know anything about first gens. they were built far before I was born. Alien technology. :P
 
I would say if your putting a locker in than that needs to be taken into account a locker sucks power from a truck like crazy if i where to do it again it would be 4.88 ! 33's are a good size for a first gen . what type of wheeling do you do?

I'm not sold on the gear calculator ?????
the gear ratio and tire size effect your speedo so with 5.29's and 33's your speedo say your going fast than you are . my speedo could be wrong but i figure it says 70 im going 65mph
 
The gear calculator is great. Thanks for that. The static loaded radius of my 33 KM2s is 16". So plug in a diameter of 32" for a more accurate reading.

It was on there when i got it . i keep it for two reasons first if in some case something might be better than nothing ,second it's funny i tell people i recover shopping carts that are stuck in the mud:biggrin2:
i figure it matches the fog lights !! i live in tucson az we have two seasons summer and almost summer . the previous owner liked the way it looked i asked to

4.88 Gear Questions

is there an outlet that these gears can be purchased new? I have an 89 4runner on 33's and lugging the motor all the time is getting a little on the annoying side and would like the better trail ability as well.

if your thrifty you can find a early - mid 90 runner with 4.88's stock i don't know if the front will be a straight swap but do some research on it
most new gears are all the same genuine gear g-2 are normal $150 each plus $200ish labor if they are bench built (you remove the 3rds yourself ) and other parts Bearings/seals,
nice runner i like the truxxus tires
 
yup, tons of places to buy gears.
you can even buy a complete 3rd.

this will be a bit more expensive, but can reduce your downtime to hours, instead of days.
 
theres a few guys I know on the NCTTORA site that have complete thirds with 4.88's in them ready to bolt on used though

you can also go to Drivetrain Specialists East Coast Gear Supply and get completely built thirds with lockers or re geared for a little cheaper than it would cost to build it yourself. They also give a 5 year warranty on there ring an pinion installs

If you are mechanically inclined, or willing to tackle swapping out the diffs, you can remove the existing 3rd member and cheaply obtain the 4.88 rear 3rd's from 2 Auto V6's. Since you are solid axle the rears fit the front. Then you can sell, trade,or keep your 4.10's. If you can do this once;then if ever you put on 35's you can do this again with some 5.29's. It's dirty and stinks bad, but makes for good dad and junior projects. Meanwhile you are not driving around with 5.29 planning to get 35's in 3 years. Or until then, Down-Shift!:lookout:

I have a 4.10 3rd that is welded, a 4.30 3rd that has a lock rite, and a 5.29 3rd that has a open diff.

Your choice for 400 just bolt in and go.

well never mind, apparently my memory sucks, A.) it was on the NCfjcruisers forum and B.) it was all the gear ratios except 4.88's and 4.56's
