What gps do you use?

Well I have a samsung galaxy s3 and a asus transformer tablet. I would like to think there must be a good app for offroad use. I know my gear will track me off the cellphone network. So I guess I need an app with fully downloadable maps, would be great if there was one with a backroad map book access. Any ideas? What do you use? Or should I suck it up and buy a dedicated bush gps?

Navigon for downloadable maps. Otherwise I prefer Waze since we can't legally use radar detectors here in VA. The user reporting function is quite good. It can be a little troublesome in road-dense downtown areas when trying to reroute. It does a good job, but the updated route sometimes lags slightly behind your actual location.

Is it any good offroad? It looks like a really expensive program to try out without knowing.

Backcountry Navigator Pro for Android. 100% free access to topo, road maps, satellite, you name it, upload GPX tracks, mark your own tracks and waypoints, and the ability to precache any maps you want at any zoom level so you can still use them when you lose cell service. It's great.

This is the same app I use for backroads & for hiking. If I remember correctly though, just to clarify, the PRO version is not free, but the map usage after that is free. They do have a free version, but I believe it has limited functionality.

I think the free version was a full functioned demo period? It's been a while, I don't remember. The app was around $10, well worth it.

I also use WAZE and was really surprised when I got my new iPhone 5... It now works with the EGO bluetooth I installed. I was going to install a Pioneer system until this system synced with the iPhone 5 and became bluetooth compatible for navigation.

Despite the occasional slow rerouting, WAZE really is good and can help draw your attention road hazards and traffic jams (in addition to radar traps), making for safer driving. I really have no need for in dash nav per se. AppRadio and the like are nice for the screen that mirrors WAZE, but I don't have any interest in GPS units (stand alone or headunit integrated) other than my phone.

WAZE let's users add roads to the know area, so I suppose there might be some off road areas (but without topography). I'll have to look next time I'm in the Nantahala or GW Forests.
