What happened to the nod?

I've always thought it a friendly gesture to give someone in your neighborhood a wave, a nod, etc. whether is be a pedestrian, another driver, etc.

Generally those gestures are returned in kind. I've seen it happen more in certain areas around the country, anyways a bit of a pet peeve rant here...

I live in an urban area just east of downtown Columbus and anytime I give a pedestrian or other driver a wave/nod whatever it is NEVER returned.

Not only that, it's a mean mug - ice grill - dirty look I get back.

It makes me feel terribly unwelcome. Here I am, trying to do my part to better a blighted area, take good care of my property, hope to help the neighborhood turn around, etc and so on. What do I get? A dirty look every time. WTF is wrong with people? The world is doomed.

Petty rant I know, but I feel a little better.

try living in the wash. dc area. Everybody here is very unfriendly. I think a lot of that is because no one is from here. Everybody is a transplant and has come to DC for the jobs, etc.

My girlfriend has commented on the south being full of much nicer people. As someone who is from Texas...i have to agree with her.

It's the same here. I live in a pretty small town in CT. When we were looking at houses up here, still living in NY, we would be waved at by everyone, and they didn't even know who we were. It was pretty cool, considering where we lived at the time where waving at random people would cause problems.

After actually getting up here, it still happened but a little less often. As of now, you can be either driving by another car or a person, and it's rare to get a wave, whether or not you actually know the person. Of course there are a few people (3 maybe) who always wave because we actually know them a little bit, or they know our cars.

People up here are extremely nice. It's weird that the waving and everything has pretty much stopped. It's the same on other roads in the area. Not sure why. I don't bother anymore unless the other person does it first, or I know them.

Yeah my town i always wave, and always get a wave back, out near the farms close to the NY border near me with huge ass houses and dirt roads everyone waves to me too there. I wouldnt really expect people in a city to wave at me. I don't go into Danbury expecting the illegal aliens on main street to wave to me. Yah, if i was in a city i would just be a little creeped out if some random guy waved at me, i would be a bit confused, and possibly flip him off.

Four fingers 4Runners!

I ride a motorcycle when the WI weather permits it and it is pretty common when passing another motorcyclist to hold out two fingers, like a peace sign, to symbolize the fact that we are riding on two wheels... even the Harley riders will do it even though I am on a Honda. Maybe 4Runner owners should start throwing up four fingers when we pass each other to signify the "4" in our 4Runners! What do you guys think? :hello:

lol I only wave at nice toyotas. I'm down here in tucson and it's not really a place to wave at most people you see even if they are in your neighborhood. 4 fingers could be mistaken for a gang sign here hahaha

Hilarious what you said about Danbury! I hate having to go there for pretty much everything. I've gotten a wave on some of the nicer streets (back roads to New Fairfield) but it's never expected.

Don't bother waving in cities. Coming from NY, I can understand the skepticism.

I think the nod started going away when the thug population started growing. Down here I've seen it get misunderstood for "let's fight" or "WTF". Better off just waving. On the indian reservation roads here folks driving the other way usually wave. When I travel up north, I can tell I've reached the great plains because everyone waves. I think its a good thing. I'm trying to break the habit of the "nod". Nobody sees it through my tint anyway. Keep waving!

In my parents neighborhood in North Carolina I always waved to people when I was in high school and everyone always happily returned that wave except for this one guy that was always walking his dog. I waved to him everytime I saw him for 3 or 4 years and NEVER got the wave back. So finally, one time when I was at home I saw him, and waved at him, got nothing back, then I saw him again that same day and I gave him the FINGER! It felt so good, and it's now my new ritual, give that a-hole the finger everytime I see him.

Or what about the ''thank you wave'' when someone let's you out. Either just a quick wave or the hand up by your rear view mirror is all that's needed when you get in front of someone.

I fell you should be granted permission to run them over if they don't... I'm kidding of course, but you get the idea.

Folks just seem to be so self absorbed anymore.

I love it when I head to the family farm in IN.

I always get waves riding around from folks.

I am in WI also ride, and I can tell you the closer you get to Milwaukee, the less waves you will get if you are not on a HD. I still wave because those guys just don't know what they are missing by sticking to HD.

I can tell you though on the really curvy stuff I don't wave because I am concentrating on the road.

There are also all sorts of different motorcycle waves. The one I appreciate the most is the tapping on top of your helmet, it signals police ahead. Another good one to keep handy is if your stopped and you put your helmet on the ground, it means you need help or assistance. I usually slow down to ask anyhow but it is a good FYI.

As far as neighborly waving, I do it all the time. It is just a nice thing to do. However if I don't get a wave back after doing it say 10 times, I give up. My one neighbor is such a crab she even started turning her back to me after she saw me wave. I even fixed this lady's snowblower for her in one of our snowstorms...she should have just moved into a place with no neighbors. Crab Ass!!
