What has improved.. 2010 -2020 5th Gen

So I'm currently upgrading my 2010 TE 4Runner and considering spending about $5K in mods - mostly to make it more Overland capable. The question that has come to mind is... What is the difference between my 2010 and the 10 year newer 2020?
Has Toyota really done anything new? I'd really like to hear from OG 5th Gen owner who bought newer 5th gens. What did you get that made you buy new?

I miss my '10 TE everyday. Honestly I would still have it if I hadn't got Jeep fever. Anyway, now I no longer have a Jeep and I have a '20 ORP. If I could get my paid-for '10 TE back and get rid of this one, I would in a heartbeat.

Differences are TSS (it's ok but not necessary), adaptive cruise control, the 8" Entune which is clunky but does have CarPlay, and pushbutton start (wow, not). If you get a Pro, it has a few more goodies like the suspension, JBL, and remote start. The '20 overall doesn't look near as good as the '10 TE, doesn't have the great dash meter display, doesn't have the unique Trail roof rack, the nice skinny black door handles, black flares, etc.

Man those early, pre face lift, 5th Gen trails were so awesome looking. My fav 5th gen.

gibburnz can probably weigh in on this. Aside from the obvious cosmetics, things like the rear camera housing are different, so relocation kits require some modding. Other than that, I'd say they are just as capable, though not as easy to find trim specific mods and side cut bumpers aren't an option if you want to keep your fogs.

Thanks for the side-by-side photos - it's cool to see the contrast. My 2010 is exactly the same as yours except I have a Gobi rack and it looks like yours was lifted (or my stock suspension is so shot that it sits lower). I love my TE - I couldn't imagine dumping over $5k into any other vehicle that has over 135,000 miles.

The reason for the question was that, as boxes roll of the UPS truck, my wife was questioning why I'm spending so much money on an 11 year old truck and that maybe I should just buy a new one...... Maybe it's time to upgrade to a new wife :becky:

How long is it going to take you to get to 250000 miles? Then amortize the $5000 over that time. Seriously, building that one is cheaper than buying and building a new one. By the tome that one is worn out you can buy a new, hopefully better 6th gen or a low mileage cheap ‘20.

That was my reasoning also. I was just wondering if there was a "must have" in the newer 5th Gens that I was missing out on (other than the cool colors). I've been working from home for 18 months now so my annual mileage is less than 10k so I could probably hold on to my 4Runner for another 10 years then convert it to a "I don't care what it looks like or if I break it" rock crawler.

I am in the same boat as you right now. I have a 2012 TE silver with KDSS with 128,000 miles. and it currently has 5100"s at all corners front set to .85. I considered selling and buying a new one and then put a Fox lift, sliders, bumpers, and skids. But have decided to keep my 2012 and put all the mods on that. I can't get rid of it as I bought it brand new in 2012 and have done all the maintenance on it. And you hardly see these OG Trail Ed around. I kick myself everyday for getting rid of my 2008 Trail Team FJ. I don't want to be kicking myself again for selling this 2012. So I am getting a Fox 2.5 lift from AccuTune with UCA's, sliders, skids, and 285"s. And no car payment!

Well the right answer is that 4runners last till around 350K without major issues other than the pink milk shake of death and so long as you take care of that valve between the radiator and transmission, you're fine.

Also, I have just over 90K on mine and just dumped around $5k into a regear and dual air lockers... because I'll have it for at least 10 more years.

There is NOTHING on the new one worth $25-30k over the one you have. Like I said, I’d take my ‘10 back in a heartbeat and sell this one eating the loss. Also, my Trail was not lifted. Just leveled out with Bilsteins.

Ok - Yep, my stock suspension is shot.

Here’s a slightly different perspective...I was in search of a used 2010-2013 Trail Edition back in 2018 instead of a new TRDO/P or Pro. I didn’t need any of the “bells and whistles” just a good, solid, capable rig and i personally couldn’t justify spending +$40k on a vehicle to modify it and potentially beat up. Nothing against the face lifted 5th gens but I felt the OG Trails were/are more rare and unique. I get excited whenever I see another OG Trail running around...except for Shoreline Blue...I fuss and yell at them (original color I wanted) Yes, it is a bit harder to get front bumpers but nearly everything else is identical.

Original owner of a 2012 TE with 180k miles... I also own a 2017 Pro. I have seen more Cement Pros than silver TE.

I’m always looking for an early gem TE in red... when I find one the Pro will be sold.

Keep And build it.

It's the same truck with a slightly nicer interior. Unless mine catastrophically fails, I'm going to keep using it until Toyota comes up with something new.

It's been paid off for years and has a brand new lift, tires, and CV axles.

Whenever I think of or see a Shoreline Blue TE, SeattleMike comes to mind.

He was a Young guy that was part of the old-old OG of this forum who was super passionate but passed suddenly. He's part of why this spot on the internet is valuable and I still value his posts to this day.

Good thread, while I’ve thought about a new 4runner, I’d still keep my current. I’d probably just get another Limited and mod it later. I mean after it gets all the mall miles in.... hahahaha.

You guys are making me feel even better about mine. I kinda like not having to worry about the warranty or resale value... can do whatever I like with it, as I plan to keep it until it rusts out.

This.

I know this will make some guys mad, but why anyone would anyone buy a new $45k truck that is literally mechanically identical to my 2010 TE is beyond me.

If I wanted a facelifted 5th gen I would find the cheapest 2014 trail I could find. I've seen some really nice ones for less than $30K.
