I called toyota to get a new coil for my recently purchased 2000 4 cylinder. They said that I should have plugs and wires, not separate coils. Started poking around on google and found that some have separate coils and some have plugs and wires. Anyone know what year they switched to separate coils? Looks like mine had an engine swap at some point.
What ignition should I have?

I thought 4runner 3rz's were all plug/wire setups... I'll do some reading.
Looks like mine may have a Tacoma engine in it. May be the reason it doesn't match up.

95- early 97 = Distributor
late 97- early 2000 = 2 Coil packs mounted on the side of the head
late 2000 - 04 = Coil on plug
The changeovers were not all at once, and came at odd times, that's why the parts stores get confused, their computers show all 97-2000's as the 2 coil pack set-up.

Even if yours has a 2.7L Tacoma engine, it's not going to matter as far as coil/plug, distributor/wire/plug, 2 coil/wire set up. As long as the truck is getting spark/fuel, timing is right, ect, it'll run.
If it has a Tacoma wiring harness, then you'll run into mismatched parts/problems.
Give the dealer the last 8 of your VIN and see what they say then.

Went to the auto parts store and asked for the coil and plugs from 2004 Tacoma. Worked perfectly. still trying to figure out if this is the original engine but at least it is running now.
