What is a Poser?

This post was written by another person (texige) on a different forum...i have copied it and inserted 4runner in the appropriate places:

Just because you appreciate a car's capability doesn't mean you are poser for not using it. I appreciate the extra level of traction I get from the 4runner (with M&S tires) while going skiing even though a 2 wheel drive with snow tires would do the job. If you buy a 4runner just to impress other people, you are a poser and can get more WOW for your money with a new black S-class however if you buy a 4runner to impress yourself, IMO you are not a poser but you are missing out on a lot of fun not taking it off road."

Well, what do you guys think?? I must admit that i agree with the above critieria for being a poser or not. I guess that if you do not ever take your 4runner off-road BUT appreciate it's capability and heritage, then it's all good.

What if you just buy it because it's a nice driving vehicle that does what it says it will do while looking good?

The VAST VAST majority of automobile buyers will never use ANY vehicle to it's potential, regardless of what that potential is. Hell, you even can't drive a 4Runner to it's on-road handling and speed limits without breaking every law in the book....let alone a Ferrari.

That said, if you put 6" s of lift and 35" super swampers on your 4Runner and never drove it past the mall.....

Fair to some extent- however, alot of hype goes along with it. Many kids my age (19) really try and make a statement with the car they drive (I'd like to exclude myself, but I cannot stop people from thinking i'm trying to say something by driving my vehicle). Albeit not all can afford the image they are aiming for, they strive to do it in other ways.

I'd really like to think that notion goes out the window as they get older. But at this point in time, I know a slew of kids who take daddy's money and their 16th birthdays/graduations/18th birthdays/etc... and pick up new mercedes/lexus'/whatever. They drive it purely to flaunt their money. And more often than not, they drive it carelessly and fail to take care of it unlike someone who purchased the vehicle on their own would take care of it.

I don't know much about posing, nor will i try and define it. But so long as someone does something in accordance to their own needs/wants/desires and doesnt act out of jealousy or mockery, than I think their good to go. For me, the 4-runner was the obvious choice. No one designs a car to be a mudder and stay off roads ALL THE TIME, so in that sense i disagree with the texige's statement. But for the obvious reasons and the features of the vehicle- I chose my runner. I live on a farm off a dirt road, I drive in sub 32* for 4months a year (ice/salt... alot of the time), I snowboard, and I like to be able to pile in my friends whenever needed.

So yep, in short... So long as you act in accordance to your own needs/desires. I think you're golden no matter what you choose.

I drive trough the snow and ice while the "car" crowd is stuck in it. I help poor bastard to get out of snow bank in a ditch. Oh, and yes I take my rig off road. Poser or Real, who gives a rats arse.

My 4R is a garage queen and never sees rain , snow , mud , ect.....

While my Ferrari get used daily for muddin , off roading , trail riding , and all around general beating.

I feel people that write crap like that , just have way to much time on their hands to worry about what everyone else thinks. Maybe he's feeling a little guilty for being a poser himself.

Hmmm, interesting responses, but are you guys reading this the same as me??

The guy is basically saying that even though off-roading may not be your thing, you are not a poser as long as you appreciate the vehicle's capability and heritage. For him, a poser is someone who buys a vehicle for image only.

Summary:

Poser = buy a vehicle for image

Not Poser = off-road your vehicle OR appreciate the vehicle's capability.

That is how I read it...and i agree with that definition. But, of course, i may be wrong in reading this guy's post.

A poser in my opinion is somebody who brags about his/her vehicle when the only reason he/she bought the ride is to showoff and never really uses it...

I've always thought of a poser as someone who tries to imply an image that he or she has something more than what they really have in order to impress people. Like a little rice burner kid putting on decals of aftermarket parts he doesnt have, or a V6 4Runner owner putting V8 badges on his 4Runner. I've even seen a Chevy Celebrity, painted up in pearl white paint, with Cadillac emblems on the doors, hood, and trunk lid. THAT's a poser.


The guys who buy big off road vehicles like Hummers, our beloved 4Runners, etc, bling em out, put huge lifts and tires on them, then never drive them offroad, are attention whores, and most have "little guy" syndrome

There's a few I work with that have the cliche lifted Fords and Chevy (6' lifts or more) with off road written all over them and are equipped with true trail gear but NEVER even see gravel. That's a poseur.

People who think image will make up for other shortcomings.

But I am a total poser by some defs, I have yet to take my 04 in a FL mud hole just to see how dirty it will get, but have a lift and big tires? Only use 4wd at the beach or up in the Mt's, not a fan of our narrow pin striping trails built for quads? Always keep it clean and parked inside every night.

Yet I saw this Hummer H1 2 door pick up for sale and wanted it? Wanted it bad - same price as resale of my rig? Not sure if I would trade straight up for the Hummer because I want nicer things in a rig likepower windows, covered storage and such. I think the cool factor of a H1 would not balance the lux I want in a car - making me a bit of a poser.

Don't get me started on Harley posers.

I guess you can call me (and all the SE owners) posers. We all appreciate our non-functional, just for looks, drag inducing, sunlight glare reflecting, fake hoodscoop.

I love my vehicle for what it does, what it can do, and that fact that I can drive it EVERYDAY without worrying (too much) that it will crap out.
Does it see pavement? Yes.
Does it see dirt? It already has and it won't be the last.
Who fits the bills to Toyota? Me.
Do I really care what anyone else thinks? I don't really give a rat's ass.

I don't mind mods just for look but it's bad when it hurt the overall performance of the vehicle.

Hoodscoops don't affect anything except add a few more drag coefficient #s unlike adding +4 rims which has a negative affect to overall perfromance of an 4wd SUV. Actually going anything above 2 sizes over OEM starts to hurt things.

There's a guy at my work with a '98 with gaudy chrome 22"s on his 3rd gen with tail lights guards,brush guard and a 4x4 banner across his windshield.

Bad taste and tacky and yes,he can do with his truck as he pleases but to the general truck/car guy his truck looks kinda silly. He's a poseur.
