What is difference between Nav unit 86120-35240 and 35241?

Doe anyone know what the difference between the OEM Nav unit model # 86120-35240 and 86120-35241?

The first one (86120-35240) has a display number in lower corner of 17006. The second one (86120-35241) has a display number of 17010.

Are they interchangable?

17001 Navigation:

17006 Nav:

17010 (can't find pictures), but all the ones that are "170xx" nomenclature instead of the more known, "E70xx", seem to be the same. I believe they are interchangeable. The only difference MAY BE in the internals. Some of them have rear camera capability, some don't. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Are you changing yours out? If so, why not get the E70** (all in one model, not like the 170** where the map disc drive in located in the rear near the tail gate)?

Like an idiot, I broke my screen. Mine is definitely 17010. I have backup camera as well as steering wheel controls. I just wanted a plug and play one to replace mine even though I was never crazy about it. Would the E70xx models just plug in using same harnesses?

I quite honestly don't think so. When I did my research on installing one (E70** series), they have a 24 pin connector that other/older ones do not. Also, early E70** and 170** series NAVs had the map DVD drive located in the rear of the vehicle, so trying to connect an E70** series would, in theory, be impossible b/c the connectors are NOT there (no need for them).

So if you want to install an E70** series NAV (Map DVD drive built into the head unit), you will have to splice into some wires (VSS wire, Parking brake, Reverse lights). Also, something I didn't think about, your 2003 Runner probably doesn't have the "digital" JBL amp. That may have to be replaced as well. So yeah, unless you are adventurous (like me, LOL), sounds like a project and half (read: Pain In The Ass). Sorry for suggesting it.

If you are only replacing the screen, give it a try (170** series). They seem to be identical. Interesting that they had TAPEs.

Yeah.i do have dvd part in rear as well as rear camera. I will take out my unit and look at connectors and compare to one i am looking at. And mine does have tape.
I was also thinking about removing nav and putting in stock stereo. I think the model is 86120-35201 (with JBL). Does that sound right?

Yeah, I checked it out. There's one on fleabay. Guy wants $250 which is insane, but I'm pretty sure that will plug and play.

$269 seems very reasonable to me, plus apparently they offer a warranty. You won't have to worry about compatibility issues.

12-pin plug size, Model 17010 JBL Nav radio '04 Limited

I found this thread via Google, and thought it might be a good place to ask about the 12-pin connector on the JBL nav radio 17010. My nav drive is in the back of my 4Runner (2004 Limited), and I have the back-up camera. Installer.com asked me to pull my radio and photograph the 12-pin connector so they can send me the correct part for an AUX port. It is either a "small" or "large" 12-pin, so I have a 50% chance of getting it right just by guessing. Time is precious and I do not want to pull my radio just to ID a plug, because I subsequently have to reinstall the radio, take it to GeekSquad and let them yank it again next week to install the stuff I need. Repeatedly removing dash parts is begging for squeeks and accidental un-pluggings, so less is best.

Any of you 4R gurus know if the JBL/Nav radio has the "big" 12-pin plug in the back?

Mine is definitely 35241. My 4Runner is a 2004, but I received it in November 2003. It is a Limited with backup camera and JBL amp. In the top photo of rear of unit, which is the backup camera plug?

Never looked at the RES (Rear Entertainment System), but just a guess:

R27
VAR+ : Video Audio Right + (positive)
VAL+ : Video Audio Right - (positive)
VA- : Video Audio negative

VV+ : Video positive
VV- : Video negative
ADPG: A signal that tells the NAV unit that a RES is installed.

If I remember correctly, the plug above labeled R27 is the plug used for the stereo jack and video input for the rear screen if there is one. VAR+, VAL+, and VA-, and ADPG being the input from the stereo jack. That leaves of course, the VV+, and VV- for the vid input.

Also, the designation "R27" is actually different between models as well. So if you look at the wiring for the Sienna, for example, the plugs are the same, with the same inputs/outputs, but labeled differently (as in R27 might be labeled R15 or R16). Toyota did this just to confuse everybody.

Unfortunately, it's the video output FROM the rear entertainment system, and INPUT into the nav unit.

The ADPG wire is basically there to tell the nav unit (or other Toyota radio) that there is (or isn't) something plugged in & therefore allows the AUX input to be selected. Again, this is an INPUT to the headunit, not an output.

That looks like older NAV plugs (lack of R26 which has 24 pins. This plug is found on newer Toyota NAVs with bluetooth, rear camera, etc. Older NAVs did not have BT and some even didn't have camera). Here is a page with what you are looking for:

That is great. Exactly what I have been looking for. I am installing an e7006 in to my Sequoia and I am probably going to have to create my own wiring for camera and mic.

Cool. I'll have to "make up some wiring" as well. I bought special "pin connectors" for the plugs so the installation is as neat as possible. Be sure to use shielded wires for the mic and video. I've been putting this project off for years. :crybaby:

Looks exactly like this, but smaller. Pin "plugs" into the round part (left of the connector in the picture) and the wire gets soldered or crimped toward the right of the connector.
