What is High Mileage?

Hi,

I am curious to see out there who has what trucks and how many miles before (if) any major problems. In other words, what is "high mileage" for the 3rd Gen?
My truck is a 1999 3.4L Limited with 186,000 which I bought used with 115,000.
So far so good for me I have replaced the radiator, starter, plugs, wires, fuel pressure regulator, had the injectors rebuilt due to engine code for misfire. That's about it I think....

I have 146k on mine right now and I'm guessing by 250k I'll feel like it's getting a bit high but I still don't expect any major issues even after that unless off-roading catches up with me.

I've had the rear axle seals done at 100k and the timing belt/water pump just done at 138k and I'll be needing new rotors by summer but outside that it's been business as usual with just regular maintenance. (brakes,fluid flushes)
 
If I were buying one I'm not sure if I'd buy one over 150k. If your talking about just owning one I'd say 225-250k would be high.
 
i know of a 98 sr5 that has 28x,xxx. they replaced water pump, timing belt. oil changed every 3,000 and it is still running strong
 
if it makes you feel better my freinds 89 pickup with the crappy 3.slow has over 300k and is still going strong i think its on its 2nd hg
 
One of my Dads company fleet vehicles is a 2000 Tacoma (almost identical to a 4runner) with 380,000 miles and it's only had regular maintanence. Its the highest mileage vehicle I've ever seen with out something failing or being rebuilt. HAHA its getting ready to get its 4th timing belt and water pump. If I can, Ill try to get pictures of it some time. It still looks good too. The interior looks better in it than my 2000 Tacoma did when I sold it at 190,000 miles.
 
I bought mine at 173k. I've only had it for 3 months, but I feel pretty confident about it's performance. I will put in the time to do preventative maintenance to help the truck last as long as possible.

From what I've read, and what I've been told; mileage doesn't matter when it comes to toyotas, as long as you do the regular maintenance.

150k on a 3rd gen is nothing but I probably wouldn't buy one with too much over 200k but anything under still has a useable life span.

i have a 98 sr5 that i bought with 180K and it now has about 240,000. It's never been in the shop for anything besides regular maintenance(oil changes). It still runs as good as the day i bought it 6 years ago and still looks brand new. That's why i love it, i get comments on how great it looks(i try an keep it clean). It runs great and i feel like it's getting faster, it really has the same if not better 'get up and go' than it did when i bought it(larger piping, and intake probably)

Constantly monitor and check fluids and oil, and tend to anything you smell or see immediately and your 4runner will definitely return the love!
 
I'm serious! if you could see the girls i got in my backseat that would of never happened with a jeep. 4Runners are scientifically proven to be chick magnets:p
 
216k on mine running strong need another timing belt again does not burn or leak a drop of oil between oil changes

My daily driver and I drive 25K a year now
 
I bought my 01 sr5 with 181,000 on it and one year and 10,000 miles later it still is running strong. Truck looks like it hasn't ever been out of the garage. Exterior is immaculate and interior is just about as nice.
 
I just rolled over 140k in my 1998. I bought it last year with about 130k on it. Their isn't a scratch on the thing inside or out. I just replaced the timing belt, water pump, fan belts etc, got the power steering fluid flushed, got all the distro fluids changed out and transmission flushed as well as the coolant. I think I'm going to do the CV joints this week after doing all my suspension mods. I'm hoping to have it for the next 5-10 years easily.
 
Love hearing how many miles you guys have on your 4Runners. I bought mine brand new in 1997 (SR5) and I'm about to hit 130,000 miles.
The wife keeps telling me I should buy a new truck. I don't think I'll need to replace my truck for a long time. I think the 3rd Gen was the best anyways, they just don't build them like they used to IMO.
 
my 98 is about to roll 178000 and i had to put another transmission in it a month after i bought it. thats only 'cause the previous owners used it full time to haul cars to and from auctions all across texas. did the tune-up and its driving beautifully now. going on 10 months with it now.
 
I just bought a 99 with 135K that was well taken care of. Aside from some dings and scratches in the paint, it's in great shape. I also looked at some with similar mileage that were dogs, they had been ridden hard and put away wet, lots of oil leaks and shaky front ends. There was no way a few of them were going to see 200K. It really depends on how well they were taken care of. If the oil was changed and the car was kept clean you can expect over 200K. If it was driven off road every weekend, you're going to pay. The best ones to get were grocery getters that the wife wants replaced.
