Reviving this thread. I currently have PM3489 installed and they are great with the GOBI ladder, maxtrax, and even a half filled trasharoo. But when that trasharoo gets full, the hatch wants to come down again. My question is has anyone found a heavier duty gas strut for the rear hatch to handle more weight than PM3489? Possibly to handle what’s stated above plus a filled RotopaX or a shovel/axe?

Bump! I'm also looking for a heavier load strut than the PM3489. I plan to run a greenlane ladder with a 3gallon rotopax and trasharoo.

I haven't found anything. I've since moved the maxtrax to a different location and plan to put a rotopax on the ladder up high so that it's easier to open. If you go your route I recommend mounting the rotopax up high on the ladder.

Thanks for the response. I spoke to LiftSupportDepot last week and they recommended the PM4004. It's not marketed on their website but bolts right up to 4runners with the appropriate length and accepts the stock ball ends. If I understand correctly, the PM3489 is made for ladders at 240lbs. The PM4004 is rated at 260lbs.

I installed them a couple days ago. With a Greenlane ladder, 3 gallon rotopax (empty), and trasharoo (empty), the PM4004s feel solid. I tied a 15lb weight to the door (to represent a full rotopax with fuel) and they work well. Hope this helps!

Thank you I appreciate the info! My next step was to reach out to them but I hadn't gotten around to it yet, plus it hasn't become a need. It definitely might in the future haha.

Another Strut you might want to look into is the PM3304.

I am using this and they hold a full 2 gallon rotopax (mounted low) and ladder up easily (could definitely handle more weight). They also do increase how high the hatch opens which makes it easier to work under.
