The earlier BMWs I'm talking about had all gone over 150k...
I don't have too much to gripe about with your suggestion

Ok. Good points and I certainly can't fault you for your thoughts
I agree with you - the Civic and Sentra are compact cars and not really equivalents.
What is out there for cars with?...
-ultra-reliable
-great value
-4 seats minimum
-mid-sized, semi-luxury
-rear-wheel drive, or AWD
-1995-2005 range
-conservative, timeless design
For the first category, I'm thinking only Honda and Toyota can be considered, but that's from my experience (first and second-hand). I know a BMW can go 300k+, but it's just not normally done, due to rising maintenance costs.
I think you keep describing a '95 Volvo 940 turbo wagon.
Car equivalent to the 4Runner, I would say the 1999 Nissan Maxima 5 speed. My all time favourite until I got this runner. If I ever get the chance I do believe I would get another.

Considering how many parts they have swapped between them, I guess at my house it's this...
In all seriousness though, my vote for equivalent car would be the Lexus sc300!
Firstly, it's a Toyota! IMO any other brand doesn't compare at all.
Second, it's got a rock solid bullet proof six cylinder that makes good power, is easy to maintain, and loves boost.
Third, it's got a timeless design that still looks fresh twenty years down the road.
Fourth, Leather seats and other fine interior appointments and power options are very similar between them.
Fifth, Priced at the top of the market when new, most have been well maintained and are very affordable today.
Sixth, lots of parts are actually interchangeable or very similar in design.
Seventh, you can basically disassemble either one with a phillips screwdriver and a 10,12,14,17mm socket or wrench.
Eighth, The aftermarket for each is fantastic. If you like modding your junk, these two can't be beat.
I could go on and on and on...
I agree with everything but timeless design. Never was a fan of this body style. Was always more an IS guy. Just love me sedans.
But other than that awesome cars. My buddy just sold his 700hp Galant VR4 to build an SC into a drag/street car. The bottom ends are beast mode. Peeps making 700hp on stock bottom ends. Amazing.
Yea, I suppose it's a matter of personal taste, Coupe or Sedan...I've always had a shine for the two door coupes. Ive owned quite a few Celicas and Supras but I never liked the hatchback...
I've always wanted to build a Celica All-Trac/GT-Four, If they weren't rare as hens teeth, Maybe I'd say that's the perfect equivalent to the 3rd Gen T4r???
The Lexus IS series are fantastic autos for sure. My wife and I test drove a couple two years ago, before she fell in love with a 09 Civic Si...
In terms of reliability, ease of working on and relative inexpensiveness of parts — what car do you think is the closest equivalent of the 3rd gen 4Runner? And why?

Ninth, they make a great pair...If you gotta have a car and a truck, well these two legendary ones are a pretty good bet.
