So I installed a Derale remote trans filter with a temp gauge and went for a drive to see what I'm running at. I installed the filter/sender before the cooler (it's just the factory in rad cooler for now). I was pleased to see the temps hover around 150 at any speed above torque converter lock-up. Driving around between 25 mph and 45 mph (lock-up speed) I was alarmed to see temps as high as 230. I was in 4wd driving on some pretty soft dirt roads but it was all pretty much steady state driving, no romping on it at all. Under 25 mph the temps came back down to 190-200 and stayed there.
So my question: what's the normal temperature operating range for the A340F? I didn't experience any noticeable slipping or anything but felt like 230 was high. I'm a little worried that my torque converter may be failing and creating excess heat. I haven't brake-torqued it to check stall but if I jump on it from a stop it seems like it flashes to about 2200 rpm.
Any thoughts? Am I worrying about nothing?
