What is the purpose of....

....the plastic liner on the inside of the door panel? Is it a moisture barrier? Will it hurt anything if I remove it?

Mine may not either, I haven't taken the door panel off of a 4th gen yet. However, every other car door I have ever taken apart, and that has been a lot, had it.

Are you sure yours does not? It's the thin, sheet type plastic, that is glued to the sheet metal with caulk type adhesive.

Don't remove it, it stops air and water from coming into the cabin. I already removed it on a previous car and could feel the cold air from every crack in the door.

Not good for heating and cooling.

agreed, its to keep moisture and air out of the cabin also helps with road noise inside the vehicle, i had to cut into mine to fix the window lift assembly i just used rtv where i pulled it back away from the metal and duck tape where i tore it in a few spots lol you can just replace the whole peice of plastic and use an rtv to get a factory repair look. you can get sheets of plastic at most hardware stores and just cut it to fit with sissors

^^^ Good advice.. My reco would be to use Butyl Tape in Lieu of the RTV.. Its less messy and works / looks the same..

It's best to keep the moisture barrier. And any components you add to the door should be on the INSIDE of the moisture barrier.
