What is the throttle sensor, and why is mine broken!

I've had erratic idle for about a week now, and no heat almost as long. changed the water pump and thermostat today. noticed that the throttle sensor was cracked where the plug went in. could this be the cause of all of my problems( if only! ) ? I have a 1989 4runner, 22re. the old water pump seemed fine.

The clip that holds the wiring harness to my tps was cracked and would fall off causing my check engine light to come on. Maybe some tape would help?

when in doubt swap it out. You can unplug it and see if that makes it run better. That's what my buddy did with the 22re in his celica to make sure it was the TPS. Than he just drove it like that until he got his new one. Try that out i cant hurt that's for sure

The Throttle Position Sensor will cause erratic idle.
You can search and find instructions to check and adjust it.

I replaced it today. we'll see how things go.

Check to be sure the coolant hose at the engine to the Throttle body isn't plugged up with anything. There's a youtube video about this. I saw it when I was diagnosing an issue on my 3.0.
