What is this behind the bumper cover?

Hey guys, newb here. I just picked up a 95 2nd gen and bought a Pro Comp light runner to install. When I went to install it, these things (see pic) appeared to be taking up the mounting hole spots behind the bumper cover. What are they (there is one on each side...just one pictured)? Can I remove them?

they look to be just bumper supports for the cover. unless you eliminate the bumper cover you will need them. i think the only reason you would get rid of them is if you get a aftermarket bumper.

Thanks for the reply. Well, I pulled the bumper and removed them. Sure enough the thread size was right for the bolts that came with the light runner bar...but the damn thing can't reach the holes. It's hard to explain..

Has anyone installed the pro comp light runner? This is really pissing me off! It's almost like there needs to be longer bolts and a spacer or something.. I am confused, should have just been an easy bolt-on more or less.

i have heard this is a big design flaw of there's on Pirate 4x4 there was a guy who wrote a article on how to fix that but you need a welder and a mill.

Thanks...yeh it's definitely not right. I'm gonna figure something out. I'd rather get a welder to modify it than go through the hassle of shipping it back

Just in case anyone comes across this thread while searching for info on the light runner I figured I'd post my fix. I ended up cutting the lower mounting bracket off in the middle and welding on an extension. I should have never had to do it, but it worked
