What is this windshield trim and how to fix it?

A trim that runs along the outside bottom of the windshield came off the other day when I was scraping ice off the windshield. Looks like it just sort of snaps into the grooves of another larger black trim below it. However, it just kept coming loose. What is that for and can I just glue it in place with some silicone? It's not leaking any water right now.

Here's a picture of the trim I'm talking about. The red box is the area where the trim came off (actually the trim runs along the whole windshield and can come completely off). The green line is the trim piece, and the blue line is the larger trim piece that the other trim (green line) snaps along it. Sorry the pics may be a bit hard to see.

I have done that before, it is a big PITA to fix just one segment like that. The only way I have fixed it and made it stay was when I needed to get under that cowl anyway to access the cabin fresh air intake.

It involves taking the wiper blades off, but then you can get the whole molded cowl along with that trim piece that snaps into it off and make sure they are connected right. You then can clean off the base of the windshield and reattach everything.

Also, I once had the dealer reattach it when the truck was in for service and they did it for no charge.
