This is also the jack I just picked up, I am very impressed with he jack for the price. I would also recommend it.

At home a floor jack with a 4x4 wood block. On the trail I have both a bottle jack with another 4x4 wood block, and a Hi-Lift Jack.
Just get a HF 3 ton floor jack, not the Alum one but the steel one. With a 20% coupon, these jacks are a great buy. That's good enough for my 4" lifted Landcruiser on 35s and easily lifts the 4runner.
I guess the trick is to lift the vehicle by placing the jack under the rear axle or under the front cross member, sort of under the Tcase then lower it on tall jack stands. This will get my wheels dangling in the air. You can always place a 4x4 block on top of the jack cradle if you need more height. Cool thing is that the floor jack is able to lift the entire front or rear end easily by placing the jack in the correct place.

For service work (suspension, tire rotation, etc.), I use this air jack I picked up off Craig's list. With 150psi air it will raise 4000 lbs to 27 inches, with positive mechanical lock stops every 4 inches or so. And, with the wide stance, it is rock solid. I still put jack stands under the frame if I'm going to be under the vehicle with wheels off, but it's a really great tool. Definitely one of the best investments I've made in terms of safety and capability.
With it placed under the front jack point, it will lift the wheels 9" clear of the floor. It will also lift the vehicle by the frame from one side, which is great for rotating tires front to back.
I have a floor jack as well, but I use it now more for jockeying suspension arms into the right place, or similar things.
For offroad, I carry the OEM bottle jack, plus a hi-lift, wheel lift attachment, and a couple of small jack stands and 12x12x4 wood blocks.
