What jack stands are inexpensive & useful for a 4runner (perhaps bought on the net?)

My cheap jack stands are about 6 inches too short for my 4runner:

• red = 11 1/2 inches to 16 1/2 inches (adjustable with pins)
• black = 15 inches (non adjustable)

From the DIYs, I see that others have taller jack stands:

May I ask where a good place/price is for getting jack stands mailorder to fit the 1997 2WD 4runner?

You need to get 6 ton jack stands. That is what I use, I believe they are from Sears.

I have the same ones you do, throw a 6"x6"x6" block of wood under it. problem solved

I have used mine for two years and would NEVER go back to using 3ton. Also get some chocks for your tires.

The spec for those Northern Tool stands are:

1. 6 ton (the 4runner is about 5,250 lbs. GVWR)
2. Minimum height 14 29/32 inches (i.e., just under 15 inches)
3. Maximum height 23 1/2 inches (i.e., ~8 inches of adjustment)
4. $40 + shipping/tax

They have to have a store somewhere in the Bay Area.

I had never looked before, but, the Northern Tools store locater indicates they're all on the right side of the country.

get some chocks for your tires.

I have chocks and always use them and jack stands in addition to the jack. You never know when there will be an earthquake out here.

The same Torin Big Red jack stands are sold at Pep Boys, and I know they have those in San Jose. It might be cheaper and easier just to pick up a pair, there.

Yep, Harbor Freight, if you have one nearby. Also, pick up the rubber covers for the stands...saves your frame paint.

I have multiple sets of the HF's and never had an issue with them. I won't normally recommend HF for a lot of things your life depends on, but after 10 years of using these I think its safe to say you'll be okay.

I have a pair of 3 tons from Harbor Freight and they've worked with no issues, they were only $15 too! Is 3 tons sufficient? A stock 3rd Gen is around 4,000 to 4,500 pounds from what I've read.

3 ton should be fine, but 6 ton is better. With how tall these trucks are to start, the smaller stands are extended further to get the truck off the ground, and start to get a bit sketchy when dealing with a lifted truck. Give it a good shake before getting under, and err on the side of safety.

I have both the 3 and 6 ton stands from harbor freight along with a high lift. The problem that I run into the most is the my racing jack from HF isn't tall enough in a lot of instances. I've solved the problem by cutting a 12" sections of 4" x 4" and using a pair of them under the jack to get my rig high enough for the jack stands. Tried it once with the high lift and almost dropped the T4R. Very scary.

Jack stands are cheap insurance and redundancy is good. I have 6. When all 4 wheels are in the air I use them all. One at each corner and 2 rovers near me.

6 ton stands seems a little excessive for our 3rd Gen 4Runner. (4000-4500 lbs right?) I use 2 ton jack stands because I never have both the front and rear end off the ground at the same time. If I could start over I would definately get some 3 ton SUV Specific ones just for the extra safety (I believe SUV stands are taller than standard stands).

It's not the weight capacity (although 2 ton is too little IMO), but the height that we use the 6 ton for. They are able to reach much higher without being maxed out due to the lifts we have. My 3 tons won't reach my frame rails anymore so 6 tons work best. Also I feel more comfortable with the wider base of a 6 ton stand than a 2 ton stand.
