What mods do you wish you had done sooner?

To the best of my knowledge there aren't 4:10's available for 5th gen 4Runners.

ECGS website has 4.10 listed for both E-locker and no E-locker diffs. Is this just a mistake?

They even have a 3.90 option for the front clamshell here which is a perfect match for 285/70R17, but unfortunately a 3.90 option doesn't exist for the rear yet.

So my guess would be there are 4.10 gears, but for some reason they don't build rear 3rds with them too often?

I wouldnt do it sooner, but it had the biggest impact on my experience. A lift. 2 weeks into it and I couldnt be happier.

Im glad I waited because I would have probably ordered the wrong springs if I hard started there.

I did. The part number of the kit is GPFJCRUISER-4.56-4, but it also says "Select Ratio: 4.10", "Select Ratio: 4.56" or "Select Ratio: 4.88" depending which you chose.

The part number never updates even if you choose 4.88, and we know that's an option.

EDIT: I went directly to the Nitro Gear website, and they don't list a 4.10, so looking like the ECGS site is just full of errors sadly.

Not sure this thread applies to me as I went for every mod as soon as humanly possible. That being said, my Pedal Commander is LEGIT. So good.

Now I have a problem. Disregard what I said in the what do you regret thread. The lift is back on the list, one day. I drool too much at some of these 4runners I see driving around and know i would kick myself.

I waited 9 months to get window tint and should have done that right away. Relatively cheap mod, but makes such a big improvement.

Agreed with several posters above about the following:
-Window Tint;
-HID Low Beams; and
-Tires (A/T)

I'd like to add my personal "wish I'd done sooner":
-I initially plasti-dipped the rear Toyota emblem and "4RUNNER" badging about two years ago. It never looked that great considering it was my first time actually using this product, and i had some minor imperfections. Maybe if I'd been better at applying plast-dip, it would be a good starter mod to fall in this list.

Last weekend i decided I had enough of how it looked and removed it. I went ahead and finally bought the ~$80 black overlays that I'm installing this weekend.

Bottom line, if you're not good at plasti-dipping, or want a nice shiny finish, spend the extra cash to get the overlays.

New dust covers are like $5/ea on amazon, you can always go back if you wanted (who would ever want that?!?), but I was a bit apprehensive as well.

My cop buddy told me about this, and I was skeptical at first, but after a week of using it...SOLD SON.

Keys go in fast and come out fast, but it won't open accidentally b/c its a tensioned piece of steel (like a leaf spring).

No more lost keys and no more keys in the pocket.

Those are standard issue at the University I work at. I had never used them before, they do work great, no lost keys yet thankfully! That snap when they click in is oddly satisfying!

I did lift snd 285s right away and although I dont regret that, I waited about 6 months to overhaul the stereo. I spent around $2400 on speakers, amp, processor/equalizer, wiring and sound deadening and did all of that work myself. It changed my entire relationship with the 4runner.

And I waited 2 years to get aftermarket wheels. Of course they dont really DO anything any better than the stock wheels, but visually??? Snap!....I had to do a body mount chop, ditch mud flaps, and perform a nose job to get the scs 17x9 -38 offsets to fit with 285s but damn it looks good!

...and theres something oddly satisfying about plunging a saw through the front fascia. Who woulda known?

That said, the body mount chop is the one mod I paid someone else to do. Everything else has been by my own hands and THAT is always satisfying.

Re-agear to 4:56. Maybe not exactly from day one but definitely sooner than I did. (I can't say for certain but probably should have done it when I went to 285/70's. Instead I waited till 285/75's) Made a huge difference in drive ability on and off road.

More details please.

How did it effect MPG? When on a HWY what speed do you typically cruise at, and is it better now? Other than 285's any other significant changes to weight? I have been considering it........but everything I read leads me to believe 4.88 is the way to go. I have roof rack, two 100Ah batteries, goose-gear drawer system, fridge, 128lb front bumper, winch, 285/70's, probably adding skids soon.....

Agree with re-gear. Would have done much sooner. I put 285/70s on right out of the gate (<1000 miles on my rig) and didn't re-gear until around 18k. Wished I didn't wait that long. Decreased gear finding at highway speeds, returned the power distribution band back towards stock and made the vehicle feel "drivable" as a daily again.

When I ran 285/70's I didn't think I needed a re-gear either. I knew that the truck was a bit sluggish but it wasn't bad enough to worry about, or so I thought then. At the time I was running lighter than stock rims and very lightweight Duratracs. When I switched to 285/75 Ridge Grapplers I not only picked up 3.5" of circumference but I think more significantly I picked up 11# a tire in weight. Or 44# rotational mass net. That turned the truck into a total dog. So I did the re-gear and wow what a difference.
So bottom line, when I consider what a huge improvement the re-gear was, I think how great it would have been for the first 30,000 miles I had the truck on 285/70's. If I knew then what I know now essentially
