What Oil filter?

I actually remember that Amsoil stopped recommending their oil filters on some Toyo models for some reason or another.

I am in the same boat as Qjake, where I would like some third party testing performed on their products for unbiased results, yet I know no one who uses their products and isn't 100% satisfied.

If gas prices are going to climb as much as predicted this year, longer oil change intervals seem to be almost mandatory. Amsoil seems to be a good choice for such.

Thanks for the links, very informative :thumb3:.

I certainly won't argue the fact that Amsoil makes some high quality products and yes they must be careful with claims they make pertaining to their products. I'm not singling out Amsoil as we both know that nearly every company conducts their own product testing, but for me independent 3rd party tests are the only reliable test.

*EDIT*
After posting I wanted to campare pricing on the Amsoil EA filter (they aren't cheap) and to my dismay Amsoil doesn't make an EA filter for the V6 4.0 1GR-FE, I was directed to a Wix filter

No problem! I had that same issue with AMSOIL not making a filter for my R32 until they purchased MANN-Filters.

Regarding the price, if you're a preferred customer you'll get 20% to 25% off the retail price. Send me a PM if you'd like to see the price differences between retail and preferred customer.

They did not purchase Mann filters. They are preferred business partners. Even their branded oil filters aren't made by them, they are made by Donaldson and Wix.

Here is the info on the 41516:

NAPA 41516

NAPA does not have a 51516. If you are talking about the NAPA 1516, equivalent to the WIX 51516, that is a Taurus NAPA GOLD filter. The 41516 NAPA Platinum is in fact slightly larger, and has a superior synthetic filter media. It is also made by WIX, and is NAPA's (and WIX's) top line filter.

Look Inside PlatinumNAPAFilter

Oil Filters | NAPAFilters | Vehicle Maintenance Center

I have used NAPA filters in all my cars (and tractors) since about 1970, with great results, and I'm not changing.

Thanks - That is the one for me I think :)

Also consider how many miles you put on your vehicle in a year's time. I'm a firm believer in never going past a year without an oil change no matter how many miles you hit. For most of my ownership of my 4Runner it was seeing 8-9k miles a year so I usually changed it by month 11 and now I'm down to less than 4000 miles a year but it'll still get changed in the same time interval.

I currently and have been running M1 (original owner ran it since it was only 10k miles old) with a Puralator PureOne filter but I wouldn't hesitate to go OEM in a heartbeat.

If I ran my truck to say 15k miles a year I'd still run M1 and change it every 10k miles or so and I'm partial to M1 since it's never failed me in 20 years over several hard run vehicles and it's readily available if I need a quart or two in a pinch.

I think most synthetics are pretty much the same as long as you run a good filter and change it when it needs it or not you can't go wrong.

Amsoil is awesome stuff too but I never felt it was worth the extra effort and cost to get.

Relocate Oil Filter

Has anyone relocated their oil filter to a more easily accessed location? Any issues with this? Problems with hose leaks, protection for filter, etc.? Used a single or dual filter? Any issues with oil flow being reduced by additional fittings and hoses? After finally getting around to doing my own vehicle maintenance, I realize that the oil filter is not in a great location on my 2001 4Runner. My wife's Trooper is extremely easy and mess-free to change the oil filter. Thanks for any advice.

Haven't relocated mine but I find it much easier to access the filter through the driver side wheelwell as opposed to underneath.

OLD THREAD REVIVAL

What's the benefit to running a larger oil filter? Do certain applications require it, like supercharged vs non supercharged?

If I run a larger filter (say the wix 51516) will it allow me to run a full 6 quarts versus the 5.5 quarts the 3.4l requires?

I will never run another K&N oil filter. I ran one in my Triumph D675, one the second oil change (3rd oil cycle) it spun a rid bearing. This was in '07, the bike was an '06. After a lot of fighting, Triumph rebuilt the motor under warranty but when I looked into it, I found other owners with the same issue, only common denominator was the K&N oil filters.

That said, I've run Fram Oil Filters on my cars and trucks for the last 20 years with no issues so I still run them. I know most of the people here don't recommend them but I've never had an issue. Much like you guys running K&N's without issue.

Wouldn't another common denominator be Triumph engines?

Ford Taurus V6 96 model

Since this is the first result for "3rd gen 4runner taurus oil filter" on Google I thought it might be worth playing thread necromancer and adding a bit of clarification.

When going for the larger oil filter size one cannot use the V6 (3.0L) engine option for the 1996 Taurus. You have to specify the V8 (3.4L) from the "SHO".

This is important for issues like I just faced - auto parts website sales. So Advanced Auto Parts had a $15 discount off of 5 quarts of oil and oil filter (some brand limitations I think but still pretty good - was even able to get a K&N filter). Trick is that the website made you select the oil filter based on the "what fits my car" feature. No problem, 1996 Taurus. Wrong! That comes up with the HP-2010 filter, not the HP-2009. Obviously I figured out you need to put in the V8.

This may have come up before, but again, top of the search results and all.

Oooh, I love a good oil/oil filter thread. I like Toyota filters and Fram filters. If I'm using OEM, I'll use the YZZD3, but if it's Fram I'll use the 3600, whichever flavor I want (XG/PH) etc.

I've used Wix and Napa filters in the past, and they are the same. They work just fine.

Oversized filters is your choice. I seen toyota techs goto classes by toyota saying it doesn't help anything.

Oil filters would be toyota. Napa [ wix ] most any decent brand but Good but not Fram. Stay away from them. I have seen 2 of those fail in my buddy's garage. For whatever reason some of those filters failed..

I like the YZZD3 6 qts of oil puts oil level dead on full mark of dipstick of 5VZ.
Makes oil change simple easy to track oil consumption if you have it.
Wix, worked at a place fleet of LPG 4.3L Vortec V6 forklifts all they would use.
Used Fram for 20 yrs or so 1980 - Y2k bad rep surfaced moved on.
Oil, like icecream everybody has a favorite. Been using Rotella T4 10W-30 for a decade.

Yup. I've used the D3's for years and 6 quarts is perfection. What makes you use the 10W-30 though, just curious.

If it ain't broke don't fix it, ha. been using it since the mid 70's of last century.

The use of 5W oils didn't come into play until mpg's became a focal point, engine oiling systems haven't changed, how I see it.

They're down to 0w16 at this point for some modern vehicles...

YZZD3 filter and Rotella T6 5W-40 for my 5vz-fe and 3s-gte engines...
