What Oil filter?

sorry this has nothing to do with oil filters, but i just joined this page about 10 minutes ago and dont know how to ask a question (start a new discussion), advice is welcome.

Yes. The issue is that the CS144 actually extends far enough back to block the oil filter. With the CS144 in, to even take off the stock size filter you have to unscrew it...and then move it around the alternator. If you try to just pull it out on the same line that it unscrews, you smack into the alt.

The tall oversize filter won't even unscrew all the way before it hits the alternator, let alone get it out.

I use a boosh when there is nothing else in stock usually because its the only thing left. Purolator is my filter of choice.

A easy way to tell what oversize filter would work. Just look and compare. Get the one from the book that you know will fit and compare the fittings.

Upon further review, it looks like the 1516 would be a good replacement.

Thanx for all the advice. With tha being said my filter of choice is a wix filter. I cant stand the Fram filters after using one on my prelude jdm h22 and it not having a check valve, made it spin a rod bearing. But I was just wondering what you all recomended. looks like there are alot of diff filters you all use.

Here is another filter breakdown. This one doesnt have the pictures like the one posted by Gerdo but the author does a good job explaining the different component functions of the filter and gives recommendations. He also links most of the brands to an official site with performance data. Pretty informative across the board.

HERE is another oil filter comparison similar the one over at the 300c forum. It's done by Chris4x4 over at TacomaWorld and its a pretty good read if ya can get past the little flame war that breaks out. In the end the OEM filter wins out.

I have run NAPA/Wix filters in everything I have owned since 1970--from tractors to a BMW 7-series. On the 4Runner, I ran the NAPA 1348 until the last change. I just switched to the larger and fancier NAPA Platinum PFL 41516 (also made by Wix--this is the Ford Taurus size) to accompany the longer OCI I have been running with synthetic (7500 miles). I'll do a UOA at my next change and see if it makes a difference. I'll report then.

May I suggest it makes a lot more sense if you post your OCI with your filter choice--just about anything works for the 3000mile obsessive-compulsive; the 10K+ crowd needs a serious high performance filter or a mid-term change, IMHO. I'm firmly in the middle.

The 41516 is the little brother or same size to the 51516 (over-sized) then? Not finding any info on the 41516.

I am currently running a Cleanable oil filter from K&P Engineering. I run Amsoil and every 5000 miles i remove and clean the filter and change the oil at 1000 miles. The oil seems to be in good shape at each iteration. when it comes time to clean the filter next i am going to send in a sample to be analyzed. here is a link to the filter i use.

Are there any independent test lab results to verify Amsoil's findings?

Personally I discount any companies test results that favor their product.

I asked that same question to the dealer who signed me up as a preferred customer some years ago. There are a few independent studies listed on AMSOILs website, but most are probably conducted by AMSOIL themselves, like most companies.

One thing to note is, if a company puts out a claim that their product is better in a certain category they better be telling the truth or they’ll be sued. AMSOIL was the first in synthetic lubricants and remains an industry leader.

Here is the info on the 41516:

NAPA 41516

NAPA does not have a 51516. If you are talking about the NAPA 1516, equivalent to the WIX 51516, that is a Taurus NAPA GOLD filter. The 41516 NAPA Platinum is in fact slightly larger, and has a superior synthetic filter media. It is also made by WIX, and is NAPA's (and WIX's) top line filter.

I certainly won't argue the fact that Amsoil makes some high quality products and yes they must be careful with claims they make pertaining to their products. I'm not singling out Amsoil as we both know that nearly every company conducts their own product testing, but for me independent 3rd party tests are the only reliable test.

*EDIT*
After posting I wanted to campare pricing on the Amsoil EA filter (they aren't cheap) and to my dismay Amsoil doesn't make an EA filter for the V6 4.0 1GR-FE, I was directed to a Wix filter :shrug:
