What roof rack and skid plate should I get?

I've been thinking about getting a roof rack for a while and the stock skid plate needs to go. What would you guys go with?

The Bud Built is a great skid, without question. If you have a little lower budget I recommend the Man-A-Fre. It is basically half the price and is 3/16" powder coated steel.

Do you have the front engine skid, and the transmission skid? Also is that powdercoated? Can anyone second man-a-fre or does everyone just recommend budbuilt?

My first roof rack was a bajarack. It was a very nice rack that was strong and looked great. It had options to mount various off-roading accessories like a shovel, axe, Hi-Lift jack, fuel cans, spare tire.

I replaced it with a custom rack by PerkinsPerformance. This rack covers the full length of the roof and has adjustable bars that you can configure to your specific needs. It also has an optional grate that goes over the sunroof for additional storage.

I went with the Bud Built skid after rocks turned my oem skid plate into a pretzel. Asfir makes a nice aluminum skid plate that I strongly considered but after looking at my stock "pretzel" I went with the BB's. If you're doing light off-roading then go with Asfir. It's light weight and looks great. If you want maximum coverage and protection but at the cost of extra weight, go with BB.

I only have a grand to spend on both, so I'd like to try and stay in that range. How much was that perkins roof rack? that thing is so sick and I'd buy one of those in a second.

Not a lot more than a grand but a little. I emailed Jason Perkins a few weeks ago and IIRC he told me $1000 for the rack, $100 for the extension grate, $70 for the crossbars and ~$200 for shipping so it'd be about $1200 for just the rack

I'd recommend the Man-a-Fre's. I've been very happy with them.

I just have the engine skid at this point, but I plan to add the tranny armor as well. The Man-A-Fre is really a heavy duty piece of steel. It is a great value for the cost.

how bad are you guy seeing a decrease in MPG with the racks on these runners?

i just picked up an '04 and was wondering.

i put a baja rack oem insert rack on my 2010 TT FJ cruiser and it is literally went from 18-19 stock to 15 mpg.

the 4 runner already sees much better MPG, just wondering what i should expect. looking into racks right now.......

I have a Surco Safari Roof Rack with 4 100watt Halogen lights mounted in it. PM for pictures and details. I had it on my runner for less than a year. Just decided to take it off because of traveling.
