What should I have the dealer throw in on used Runner?

Hey guys,

I just need some quick help here in the next 4 hours or so. This is definitely something I could figure out myself if I had more time but I have a hectic day and need to get under the truck to really check it out so no time to research.

I've found a nice 2011 Runner at a dealership near me that I'm planning to buy. It's a "One Price" dealership so I don't think they're going to be all that willing to negotiate on the price (and it's not a bad price where it is) - but I always like to negotiate SOMETHING on a used car just on principle!

Can you guys give me some ideas on accessories that their parts department would have that I might get them to throw in? I'm thinking cargo management, skid plates, TRD shift knob (kidding)....I have no idea really! I don't really know what's available and I don't really have time to research it at the moment. Floor mats are an obvious one but it has those (carpet and WeatherTech).

Quick thoughts?

Sorry, I know I need to "do a search" but am just pressed for time and trying to "crowd source" my research!

Here are some ideas:

- Swap out the tires to something a little more aggressive (like BFG KO2s),or
- Swap out the rims to something you like, the TRD Pro Black Rims, or
- Ask their service department to throw in free maintenance for the next 2 years

Really I'd still try to budge on price. If you are financing make sure you shop rates.

How about free oil changes or scheduled service? Extended warranty?

Get two sets of keys and fobs plus maybe a valet key also. It's expensive and a hassle to get spare keys.
 
if you are comfortable negotiating though, are you sure you want to buy from a dealership that doesn't negotiate? in me experience it usually means higher prices.
 
If they wont negotiate...if not A/T tires, just newer tires. The tires a lot of used cars come with are within tolerance, but you will need new tires in the next few thousand miles. I vote tires.

If not that remote start/tint/extra keys?

Yea, I'd first find out how many keys/fobs you're going to get. They are a PITA to replace and expensive too (ask Antman!). We're more careful with ours thanks to him! Standard is 2 sets with fobs and 1 valet key.

I doubt the dealer will have any armor (skid plates, sliders, etc.) other than stock. I would inspect the windshield carefully. They can be expensive to replace with OEM and if it has a crack or repair I'd ask for that.
 
All great suggestions. They may be willing to negotiate (I'm at the dealer now) but their price isn't bad vs blue book. 2011 SR5 Premium, 105k miles. $22.9k. It already has most of the stuff you guys have mentioned - key fob, tint, new windshield, new tires (generic but an A/T pattern and brand new). I like the ideas of remote start and maintenance. I was wrong about mats - WeatherTech but no carpet. I may shoot for those.

Trade maybe - I have an old Audi that isn't worth much more than scrap according to the book. If they give me a decent amount that would work.

unless this is carmax or something with a firm no negotiation pricing, you should never pay what they list even if you think its a good price (you're welcome to try to negotiate at carmax, they won't though IME)
 
That's a lot of miles for a 6+ year old vehicle. I wonder what kind of miles they are? I'd also ask for maint / accident records and also check the date on the battery. Also look at the fluids that you can check (oil, coolant, p/s, etc.). Definitely get it on a lift to inspect the underside. Look for leaks or clean up evidence. Inspect boots on CV joints and look for collision damage / repair. If they balk at your request - I'd walk away.
 
No, no, they didn't balk at anything. They were pretty cool about everything in fact. They let me take it home all morning to do with it as I pleased. They'd already done all the fluids and I didn't get it up on a lift but up on jackstands so I could roll around under it on my creeper. Everything looked great. No leaks, CV joints look almost new. Only a little surface rust here and there even on the exhaust. If they ever wheeled it at all they never bottomed it out that I can see. No scars even on the lower "A" arms. It's a 1-owner vehicle that appears to be well cared for and traded in when it passed 100k miles. New-ish battery.

I have a CarFax that has quite a bit of maintenance records on it. So I don't have full records but I know the oil got changed regularly. "Official" Toyota service ended when the warranty did. No crashes on the CarFax and no bondo that I could detect with a magnet.

105k seems about par for the course with what's offered for sale around here. "They" say 15k a year is average so that would be about 90k. I'll put on more in the next 6 years for sure.

They had it listed higher on Craigslist, but when you clicked through you got their "best price". But that wasn't really their "best" price as it turned out. I got another $1500 knocked off. And I got my floor mats! Which was funny because I didn't think they'd agreed to that until they handed me an "owe me" form that said they'd ordered them. I said "I want $2000 off and a set of floor mats" and they said "how about $1500" and the mats were never discussed again.

Then of course I noticed it had the button in the picture below and knew I had to have it! ;)

I'll post pictures once I have a couple of "glamour shots".
