What should I watch out for?

My buddy has had a string of bad luck. Wrecked his car last night, and is now trying to find something in the sub $1200 range. Found a 94 4R last night on craigslist and I'm gonna go check it out with him. Anything I should look for on it as a "definitely dont buy this". Only info we have so far is that it needs a new muffler. Any help would be great!

If it's a 3.0 ask about the head gaskets, timing belt, etc

That's true. Expect the worst and hope for the best.

This. If it recently passed emissions in your area and it goes when you hit the gas and stops when you hit the brakes, that's about all you can ask of a $1200 truck. I don't know that I'd pay even that much for a rig that was missing parts needed to run, though.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. It actually ended up being really clean vehicle! But found a much better deal elsewhere. When your choice is have a car to get you to work, or not, $1200 is your friend.

Like I passed on to my kids...

When buying a used vehicle -- ANY used vehicle -- expect to spend and additional $1,000.00 in parts/repairs right off the bat.

So a $1,500.00 vehicle will run between 2 and 3 thousand to make it road worthy.
