What to do about broken mirror glass on a '96 T4R

I took my 96 to a car wash for a detail job. They broke the driver's side mirror glass. The car wash guy said that he would replace it, but it was Thursday before the Labor Day weekend, and since I'm leaving for a 3 week trip on Tuesday, I didn't want to take a chance on not getting it fixed before Tuesday. So I called the dealer and was told that I could not just order the glass, but had to get the whole thing for the 96. So I ordered the part from the dealer in the hope it would arrive on Friday or Saturday. I need a white one. The dealer made me pay up front ($250.00) to place the order. So the next day, the car wash guy calls to say that he got a white mirror from a junk yard. I found a great video on YouTube on how to remove the mirror for a 96 (How To Install Replace Side Rear View Mirror Toyota 4Runner 96-02 1AAuto.com - YouTube). I removed the broken one and installed the replacement. Easy job. I called the dealer to cancel the order since their part would not arrive until Tuesday after all. They agreed to credit my card without a restocking charge. Very nice of them. But why I am writing this is because after taking the broken one off, I took the broken glass out and discovered that just the glass can be replaced after all. You would just need to either find a piece to fit, or have an auto glass shop cut one that will fit. There is absolutely no reason at all why just the glass can not be replaced in the 96. My trust and confidence in the dealer has been shaken.

Yes, it does. I saw that before I called the dealer and was told by the parts person that the glass alone is not available for the 96 only. I was in a bind time-wise, so I ordered the whole unit. Never again (if I ever need new glass).

Pain in the ass to install.

I bought a new mirror from a damaged 4runner and replaced the whole motor assembly. Still to this day do I know how you could just replace the glass.

The motor and assembly wasn't that easy either.
