What to do.. Keep or sell?

Well, I have a thing for long lasting or vehicles that last long.

I recently inherited a 4runner 2002 4x4 for a good price.. Its clean and I plan on selling it. However After driving it for a bit, I do like it for its ruggedness and I feel that I can take it anywhere, fishing, camping etc.. without worrying about it being dirty or scratched.. Well I do care but it would not hurt as much as my other car.

However if I do decide on keeping it. I will add a 2'' lift and some A/t tires.. Meaning more money into it.

I dont want to regret putting money into it and end up selling it 6 months later, because I am bored of it.

However, eventually I would like a 4th gen 4runner. But it has to have leather (limited edition); but that will be a couple years down the road. Meaning more money and I would probably have to sell my car.. Because one of it is not going to be used much.. My wife already have a SAV, and I have a nice Sedan.

But if I do keep the current 4runner. Its low enough price that I can call it a outdoors Vehicle, and keep all 3 vehicles. I like road trips and am afraid it will not be as comfortable driving a few hundred miles, with a small lift and all terrain tires..

For reference I has a 2004 TJ wrangler.. I had a 6" lift and 32 bgf muds.. With the short wheelbase and mud tires.. It was too rough and annoying driving daily and on trips.. I sold it.. BUt I did like how it drove with a 2'' lift I put on the very first week of ownership.

Inputs? of regrets?

No regrets, ever. Im on my 4th toyota 4x4
I live at 6300 feet and use mine for offraod/camping/mtn biking trips sometimes above 13000 feet, and as a daily driver.
DONT compare this to a TJ. Its not a jeep. Thankfully
Dont compare it to a sedan. Its not.
If you have a need for a good vehicle that does REALLY well off and on road, Keep it.
Leather is not a reason to keep or get rid of a vehicle thats kicks ass.
3rd gen is the best. 4th gen guys can pipe in anytime ;)
Whichever generation you chose, toyotas last.
maybe its too much for you? I dont know

Last May I was hit head on while making a left turn. The other driver was going about 60 MPH. The impact spun my 2003 4Runner around 360 degrees and then he hit the rear bumper and spun me back another 15 degrees.

I bought another 4Runner. After that collision and I did not even get a bruise I would not buy another vehicle.

You are in a great position a lot of us wish we were in. You have a 4Runner that you can build for play and don't need to use as a daily driver.

If you like going off road at all, keep the 4Runner and make it the way you want it. In 6 months or less it will probably be your daily driver.

My vote would be to keep it. I drove my 4 runner from Oregon to Alaska this past winter on 32" Duratracs. While those are not a mud terrain tire, it was extremely comfortable.
This was the first SUV I've owned and I wouldn't want to own any other vehicle. It suits my family's needs perfectly. We can haul our dogs, kayaks, mountain bikes, snowboards, etc... and get there safely and comfortably. I plan on driving this until the wheels fall off, and then going out and finding another one.
 
KEEP IT. I'm on my second 3rd gen. The first I sold at 200,000 miles for $7,000. These vehicles are amazing. I sold my t4r, bought a subaru, and I missed it so much I bought another t4r. i won't go back. Keep it. you said you inherited it? Worst case you put some money into, sell it, keep it under $7,000 and you'll still come out with money to spare, but I promise you, Once you start, you won't stop (coming from somebody who has done one mod and suddenly wants the entire world)
 
lol.. probably came to the wrong place for an non bias opinion. I think everyone here will say keep it. How much you selling it for? I might buy it.
 
You don't want it. Since you got it for a good price and I live close to you, sell it to me cheap and I'll get the problem off your hands. :D
 
LOL, I did not inherit it for free. Long story I rather not get into. But trying to sell to get what I paid .

I am not wealthy, and I just have to much hobbies. That cost alot. :/

I went camping once this year.. and Fished countless times.. and 3 road trips so far. Does this warrant a outdoors vehicle???

I dont do hard 4x4, because none of my friends are into it.. Nor have 4x4.
But I do love the outdoors and so does my wife.

Im just itching to lift it and put tires.. Its such a clean and unmolested platform.

Both our other vehicles are leather and have heated seats.. Call me a panzy but on long cold road trips.. It is a joy to have. I just think if I am going to buy a 4th gen limited. I would use it as a DD also and it will replace our SAV. Which my wife will mainly drive.. But if I choose to keep this, im going to drive it 98% of the time.

Another question. I feel that the suspension on this 3rd gen is too soft and wobbly.. Would a 2'' coil left and new shocks fix it? I would like it not too stiff and yet be more progressive.

just went on a 1500 mile 10 day road trip last month with my 4runner. About a 1.5" lift and ATs. Its my 2nd vehicle and DD. If its pure street I take my car, but its nice having the space, and a vehicle to get places thats nice, but not too nice.

I toyed with getting something nicer, but then I;d worry about messing it up.

This is me too. I drive my 4Runner a lot. I don't like taking my e38 out in rain or parking it places where I'd sorry about it. So my 4Runner gets a lot of duty. But that's why I love it. It does what I want it to, and doesn't ask for much in return.

Thats great.. I feel the same.. Both my car and wife are really comfortable on roadtrips.. I wont hesitate to take them on roadtrips.. I like to enjoy my things. But do worry, like you mentioned of shopping carts, and inconsiderate people opening their doors.

If I keep this Runner. I would like to enjoy taking it out as the other vehicles. Mainly wanting it to be comfortable.
I also know dings wont bug me as much..

Btw can you share your specs on your lift and ride quality?

I am even considering a coil spacer lift. and newer extended shocks.

Obviously you can just drive it stock for a few years until you really appreciate it. If at that point you decide you want to keep it and lift it then great.

I've owned my 4Runner since 2003 and didn't lift it until around 2007.
 
I have found in the past that it is absloutly priceless to have a third car around at times, one is in the shop and you save on rentals you can loan it to friends. keep the damn thing and see what happens you will not regret it. you can most likely insure it for next to nothing with the multi car discount that most angencys offer. if that truck has under 200k on it and everything works look at the thing as an asset. You have a back up car and a chunk of money sitting in your dirveway if you ever need it.
in terms of how will it ride with the lift. you get what you pay for cheap vs top end, hammered together half assed in your garage or done right. right now you dont have to spend money on it....
i say keep it as is and slap a good set of AT's on it and all of a sudden you have a truck that can tackle almost anything you throw at it short of high clearence off road trails and deep mud
 
Op - tundra setup and a small spacer and 99 rears. Its cheap and the tundra front is a nice street setup and vastly better than stock.
