What to do with these neglected urban runner LTD wheels??

I posted two pics one of the rears and one of the fronts. Just purchased this 08 and this is the current condition of the wheels. Also the tires do need to be replaced soon so that should factor in.

I did some preliminary research. Here is what I found.

(1) Cheap option. Buy some used 2016 stock wheels ($200-300). Some come with tires ($500-$600). I guess the question is would these even fit?


(2) Repair option. I would have to get the wheels repaired. Any idea on what options and cost? Powder coat? I read that runs over $100 per wheel? Any insights?
This seems to be a pretty expensive option.

(3) TRD option, this should cost approx $1500 for wheels and tires correct?

So that’s what I can come up with. Any other options? Cheaper or cost effective would be great. At the end of the day I want a functioning solid looking car. And I want to net out as little as possible. Thanks y’all!

Sand or sandblast or powdercoat them all cheaper than buying unless find some stupid cheap ! IMO of course :brick:
 
1) All the 17", 18" and even 20" Taco/FJ/4Runner 6 lug rims are interchangeable. Do as your heart desires. The Trail Edition rims are a easy/hot commodity. Watch out for the 16" rims as they may not clear your calipers.

2) Pricing varies. Call your local wheel refurb/finisher/powder coater. Some will cut off labor charges if you prep the wheels before hand.

3) There's a vendor selling knock off TRD wheels. Still good quality with a wider width and more color options. Cheaper than official TRD branded ones.

4) Cheap route?
a) Sand/smooth down, then plastidip.
b) Sand/smooth down, refinish them yourself with rattle cans.
 
Guy here in Vegas does 75$ a wheel , does all the prep , had both done there !:bounce: probably find cheaper but get what you pay . Also go satin not gloss finish lasts longer !

That sounds like a good price. Do you know the turnaround time? And contact info?
 
It is pretty easy to use a wire wheel to knock all the crust off. Use a dremel to get the tight places. bring it down to as bare as possible, then plasti-dip it. That is what I would do.

This. TBH with uglier wheels I'd probably just power-wash them first and then spray dip from the hardware store. 1 can/wheel is probably enough, but if you had 6 cans total you'd be in good shape.
 
If it was me I would take the cheap route. Take the wheels off your 4runner, wash them really well and then sand down the front, get some adhesion primer then spray paint them. There are TONS of videos on Youtube that I have found that are very good in depth how to videos.

I have a set of 17" Sport wheels that has the clear coat peeling off and within the next few weeks I plan to clean them up and paint them.

I guess it all depends on how much time and money you have. If you don't have the time then take them and get them sand blasted and then powder coated.
 
Sandblasting and powder coating is the only way to go as far as repairing that finish, IMO.

You could sand by hand and re-finish with aerosol cans, but that would be a crap ton of work, not to mention all the toxic dust/paint you would inevitably inhale.

I would figure an easy $400 to blast and coat those wheels including tax. $75-100 per wheel seems to be the going rate in my area. Considering that used sets run $200-300 at the low end, that might be a viable option. It would also allow you keep the style of the wheels (if you really like them), while choosing a custom finish. Add in the price of dismount/mount/balance on the tires and you'll prob be close to $500 all said and done. One last thing to keep in mind is that blasting does remove some base material, so you may have some balancing issues afterward.

For $500 you're getting awfully close to the cost of a nice, new set of wheels. Most TRD wheels can be had for $175-200 per wheel, and aftermarket options are easy to find at $125-150. The trick would be that 17" is the most common diameter, so you'll probably need tires too.

All in all, a great excuse to upgrade the whole package.
 
Powder Coat

I powder coated my factory wheels in Cincinnati, got all 5 done for $400. Took a couple 2-3 days. They look great and have held up well so far after 1.5 years no issues. There might be an issue with chrome wheels...not sure you can powder coat over that or something...

I have the same wheels on my 08 in the same condition, there must have been a bad batch or something, as my undercarriage is in great shape and I'm meticulous with care.

I'm losing air at the bead if I park a certain way on one of them due to the extent of the corrosion (and aging tires), probably replace the whole setup with TRD wheels, as it'll be a ton of work to save these.

Thanks all for the replies. I hit up a bunch of shops in la. Best quote I got was $360 to get them stripped and powder coated satin black.

Also found a set of 15 trail wheels with tires in similar condition that need to be replaced soon for $350.

What do y'all think now? Lol
