What type of grass do you have?

I live in Southern California. I am about to redo my lawn. I read lots of information on the web. 5 yrs ago, I re-sodded the lawn with Marathon 2 grass. Now, the old Bermunda grass took over and killed my Marathon 2 (tall fescue). I don't think I totally killed the Bermunda grass before I sodded my Marathon 5 yrs ago.

Now. I am ready to resod the front yard. I came down to Marathon 1 or St. Augustine. I know that St. Augustine will dormant in the winter and Tall Fescue green year round.

Please let me know what you have and your experience.

I dont know much about grass, but try to find a low maintanence kind that wont die easy!

To be honest it really depends on your exact location in Southern California. Some areas are more baren than others. If you're on the coastal areas that is another animal all together as most of your irrigation water and rain water will have higher amounts of Na and effect the pH of the soil etc differently as well. Seashore Paspalum is the no brainer there.

One thing you really need to do is kill off the old bermuda if you plan on putting anything else down. It is one of the most invasive species out there and if your neighbors have it then you will probably end of with it merging into your lawn anyways at some point unless you have a proper barrier in place. This link will provide some decent info for you to ponder. In the end one other factor is how much you're going to maintain the lawn as well. Certain cultivars require more TLC. Good luck!

I would go with artificial grass when my lawn is dead. This way it lowers my water bill and the need for me to mow it every couple weeks.

My parent's house has St. Augustine. It's a nice thick green. They had it put in when we got the house. I had to maintain it and I used Scott Fertilizer (I don't remember the particular kind right now, Turf Builder?).

It's pretty hardcore maintaining grass. Apparently, you gotta put stuff down all seasons with each one serving a specific purpose (weed killing, winter prep).

I have some weird interests. :/

How hot is it in the summers at your location? You said that tall fescue will stay green all year, everyone has it in North Carolina and come summer it all turns brown and goes dormant. Unless you can water it twice a day it will go dormant in the heat. Tall fescue really only likes temps between 50-65 degrees.

Can't go wrong with centipede. Stays green in hot weather, can withstand high acidic soil, grows really slow, takes very little to maintain. Doesn't grow well in cold climates I don't think, but not too sure on that.

It's also known as the lazy man's grass.
