What type of sub sounds best in a 4th gen, sealed or ported?

"Sounds best" is subjective. Are you going for SPL or SQ? I suggest doing some reading at DIYMA about how enclosure type affects sound.

i ran seal and ported, ported is much better for the heavy bass type of music, also if you really switch to ported, have to get the box built to spec for the sub you have, a little over i ok, but never under. also you will gain 3db, that will mean itll be 3 times more louder with what you have, and you dont need that much power to make it sound louder. i run ported for a long ass time now, the sealed setup i had wasnt enough bass to me.

I must respectfully disagree with the 3db statement.
An increase of 3db in spl is jut that, a 3db increase in spl.
In order to achieve a 3db increase in spl the power must be doubled.
For example
20db spl at 30 watts
23db spl at 60 watts

I run a sealed 12" and it's just the right amount of bass to go along with my focal components front and back(amped). I was going for more of overall sound quality than bumping down the block bass

What really comes into play is effiency of the speakers themselves.
Given, let's say, 40w input power with the same program, a set of Klipsch will be perceived louder than a set of Bose.
Wether it sound harsh or smooth is up to you, however, that can be compensated.
Sub-woofers have a lot less "wiggle room" in that respect. Still the effiency of the coil comes into play.
It all depends on what "sounds" good to you.

As a side note,
Almost every live concert you, and I, have ever been to, is presented to you/us in mono.

I have 2 10" subs in a sealed box that's polly stuffed and down firing and I absolutely love it, down side is that it takes up a lot of space but I don't put any thing in there that cant lay on top of the box. I have a preference of sealed boxes, I think they sound cleaner but that's just me. I listen to wide verity of types of music and, just a little adjustment on the head unit between genres and its good to go.

well i play my system super loud. so i say ported, if you dont like the ported box, sell it to get some money back. if you stop by a stereo shop, usually they can let you try there ported setup. and see if you like the sound. even if the box is super cheap, you can still craigslist that box if you hate it.

I have a 10" jl w6v3 in a sealed (small) removable box that's driven by a jl hd750/1. Basically everything sounds great (classical, lumineers, flume, bassnectar, migos, future, etc..) and most people think I have more that one or something larger than a 10 when they hear it. Also, when I need to use the cargo area I just pull it out.
