what winch would you recommend?

when i got my 4runner i was all excited about the winch...come to find out it doesn't work...im going to take it off and try to find the problem but if i can't im wondering what winch is the best "bang for the buck"? and what size?

Smitty built seems to have a rapidly growing fan base. But you cant go wrong with a proven name like Warn..

Who makes your current winch? Winches really arent more than a over sized starter motor and some gear reduction, usually not too bad to fix/rebuild..

its a warn...but i think it may be a older style.
im going to be taking it off and having a look..
 
you can kind of see it here, i have no clue on what model, size or anything... i'll let ya'll know when i take it off.

it's a XD9000 warn winch...the guy that had it before me said he was using it and it quit. like shut the truck off and wouldn't let it start he had to cut the negative wire for the truck to work.....any ideas?

That's weird... I have had a few warn winches for repair throughout the past, usually they are just filled with rust and dirt and have become stuck. I'd start taking measuring all the coils, measure the motor with an ohm meter and just take it apart. There are good schematics on the internet (also there are exploded view images of the winches on the Warn site)
It's not really that hard, it just takes some time and patience.

If you have a digital camera I'd suggest taking photos of all the steps and all the parts you take apart, it'll ease the reassembly. Usually cleaning the gear up with diesel or kerosene and relube it with grease...

Test the motor and the coils with an ohmmeter and test the motor by applying voltage across the terminals. Just be careful! You can fry the motor or the relays by connecting them incorrectly.

i appreciate your response. im going to be testing the motor and the solenoids tomorrow. it didn't make since to me either, to me it just sounds like a short somewhere down the line.

I just had a thought; What if the control is wired via the ignition on the truck or something like that, and one of the relay is broken, then it would shorten the ignition and cause the truck not to start. If the motor would short to ground or something like that it'd probably cause the battery to explode or the car to run dead at least (or cause a fire...)
 
pure genius...lol. ill check that. but im leaning more towards it was just grounded out not letting it to complete the circuit. but im really new to this kind of stuff so i guess it's just trial and error from here.
 
Obviously Warns are the most popular, but I had a 12k MileMarker on my old Ramcharger that got me out of trouble more than once. I would have no problem getting another. For the 4Runner I'd go with an 8 or 9k.
